I was recently told by a leader of the church “ you can’t expect much, they are just volunteers” Correct me if I am wrong but weren’t the disciples just volunteers? Weren’t the prophets just volunteers? Moses? Abraham?
I can not believe that we as Christians have come to sell ourselves so short that there is no accountability anymore. Just because someone is not paid does not mean they should not be expected to perform a certain task. Especially if we profess God as our King, our service to Him should reflect it.
Churches today have a lot of duties that are now performed by volunteers ( as it should be) and yet there is a total lack of accountability to the person performing the task. “ Oh, if we make them mad they may not come back”. A far cry from fire from heaven or the belly of a whale when a volunteer did not do their task.
We have decided that we must coddle people into serving the true and living God. I am not sure this service is pleasing to Him in any form. Luke warm volunteers will be spewed out of His mouth is you read and believe His word.
As hard as it is, I do not believe we have anymore volunteers by the way things are run now. Years ago, the church had things it needed, the congregation was informed, and it was expected to get done. Now 15% of the congregation does 90% of the work and no one else is held accountable.
I believe leaders fail God when they take a fainting approach to a ministry. If we believe in our heart of hearts that He is the ruler of the Universe we should serve Him, accordingly and expect those around us to do the same.
