Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday August 3, 2010
One of the most powerful statements I ever heard was simple one and I doubt that the man who said it had the slightest idea of what he was saying. It was about 50 years ago and I was working in the trim department of Shult Mobile Homes and a new boss from out of state, Bob Dersch, watched me as I worked, he knew this was a rare opportunity, and in a few minutes he asked his question: "Larry, have you asked yourself; 'Is there a better way to do this?'"
After a few sleepless nights pondering his question I did in fact discover a better way than the one in which I had been trained. I am sure they have an even better way now.
The point is that unless we ask the question there will never be progress. The principle holds true in every area of life. Tragically most of us are like horses walking behind one another seeing nothing but what is immediately in front of us. If you have watched this you know the only thing that can be seen by all the horses except the one leading.
Chew on this quote from a man who changed a segment of American Society and even the way the government does things. Well, at least as best a bloated bureaucracy can.
"If everybody else is doing it one way, there's a good chance you can find your niche by going in exactly the opposite direction. But be prepared for a lot of folks to wave you down and tell you you’re headed the wrong way."
This statement is not one that reaches out and captivates your imagination, until you read the name of the author. Most small towns and all large cities in the United States feature one of more of his stores and his innovative ideas have enabled the average American to purchase much more for less. Our quote today comes from Sam Walton. He found a way to service the needs of a new generation, a generation unlike any prior generation, and certainly is open to criticism, but can you name one person who impacted the way we live that is not open to wagging tongues?
Jesus Christ is the most loved and maligned innovator in all history. Read it for yourself. Aside from the enormous theological impact, Jesus changed the way we think about God, about redemption, about each other and made it clear on just how we can be saved.
Is there a better way to do your devotions? A better way to build lasting relationships? You get the idea and it may be worthwhile to at least ask the question.
