Who Will Carry On
The old man kneels in prayer
From his past he knew the Lord would meet him there.
Though once this place was filled with children’s bustle
In vain he longs to hear the young hustle.
In his day parents brought them one by one
Church was more important than secular fun.
Today in vain those former churched try to hide
And fill the emptiness kept deep inside.
Around the old man are signs of the past
Sunday school lessons and crumpled tracts.
On the walls the children once painted
Remain the scenes though now faded.
The old man pleads with the Lord to bring them back in
Those children who grew up in this house calling on Him.
“Please let them see that the wicked one
Has blinded their eyes with the things under the sun.”
“Oh Lord,” comes the cry, “Do the parents not care?
Do they not fear the coming eternity where
Their own children will someday hear,
‘Depart from me. You do not belong here.’
Did not you command us to find worthy men
And pass this Word onto them?
Did not you also warn that someday man’s ear
Would turn deaf and the Word no longer fear?”
The old man cries out, “Lord Who will carry on
When I am dead and from Your house have gone?”
From deep inside the answer flows,
“Only those to whom you will go.”
