Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday July 7, 2010
For years I read with pleasure Sidney J. Harris's column in the Chicago Sun times. I confess that his regular references to the wife of his youth as "The Blonde" perked my old brain to reference the girl of my youth as "The Great Blonde." To this day Joyce will not read the Sun Times even though Sid passed from the scene years ago.
As some of you know I am home this week basking in the tranquility of a house empty of other people, occupied solely by 5 dogs of various sizes and yours truly. I chose the hermitic life rather than bask in the balmy breezes of Myrtle Beach with the wife, children and their children. That I have suffered severe criticism due to my choice of canine critters over grandchildren goes without saying. With the dogs I feel somewhat like a veterinarian; with the grandchildren it's more like zoo keeper. The last time I was with all of the children's children I had a near uncontrollable urge to go to work for Mutual of Omaha.
Here is my quote for today from the pen of the late Sidney J. Harris:
"When I hear somebody sigh, 'Life is hard,' I am always tempted to ask, 'Compared to what?'"
For the most part in life we can make a choice about people, situations, even where we live, work or play. Most of life's troubles are centered in one of the above. So the choice is important. I admit the children/grandchildren in the mix can be a problem, but we could put them up for adoption, or as my Mother used to threaten, "I'm giving you to the Gypsies the next time they come by." Of course by the time I was twelve, this no longer struck fear in my heart, for I became aware of the stunning beauty of like aged Gypsy girls. Mom kept me; therefore my prayer was not answered.
On a less serious note, the truth is life is what you make it, and with Jesus at the controls life is abundant as He stated in John 10:10:
"The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."
To mouth that "Life is hard" is really stating unbelief in the promise of Christ. John Wayne had it right when he said, "Life is hard, it's even harder when you're stupid." Leave off being a "Ninny" and trust Christ for life abundant.
