a sweet spirit
unmarred by the world
remains tender
gentle and joyful
slowly the child grows up
yet remains protected
from sinful ways
till one day
an unkind word
slips past her ears
and grazes her heart
another comment comes later
and leaves a larger wound
the remarks are few
but painful
and this precious one
does not understand
how to handle them
so she lets them seep in
leaving a stain
making her feel worthless
unlovely and unloved
she is not accustomed to these thoughts
and bars herself
from future infections
of this kind
by placing a wall
between herself
and the rest of the human race
feeling unwanted
she talks herself into a bitter spirit
and a hardened heart
thinking her feelings have no value
she places no value on those of others
her sweet spirit
her gentle demeanor
her peaceful countenance
begin to fade
replaced by stress
bitterness and frustration
once slow to anger
her temper now flies
until one day
in a quiet moment
the Lord pricks her heart
and whispers that He loves her
that she is loved
valuable and unique
silently tears fall down her cheeks
as the veil of deception is lifted
she reaches again for the spirit
that once dominated her nature
and clings to the sweetness she longed for
as she sat behind her wall

I really enjoyed this poem. I went through something much similar last year, only I did not turn against others with my bitterness and frustration--Thank God. Somehow while having my own pains deep down, the effect on me was to have a greater respect for everyone else. I didn't and still do not want anyone else to feel unwanted. I know how that feels on some level, and no one deserves that pain. Great poem. --Whitney
