Reading the book of Job is like reading through a phase in everyone's life! Its a general expression of the life almost every christian will go through at one point in time.
When i went through such a phase in my life, it was to do with something i really wanted, yet couldn't get.
All earthly workouts can really point to you being 'clean' and pure from any wrong doing that can lead to such 'punishments'; but the fact is that earthly thoughts can be a very huge bunch of empty nothings.
What i really admire about God's character is that he does the best (in terms of you going to heaven) for you, yet never bribes you to gain your trust. He sticks to principle!
The moment we go through the agony, pain and weariness; GOD suffers names, curses and public shame that we generate through our disbelief & little-faith.
On the other, when we are living a good life, he gets our empty nothings; hypocrisy, 'tithes', sacrifices and 'fastings' that do not have a warm heart behind.
Throw away those empty nothings in you, get loaded with the Holy Spirit.
