The deep blue wondrous sea is most beautiful scenery… when you get to the bottom that is. This magnificent place has some of the most beautiful creatures in the world down here! It has colorful kelp and seaweed, fish and other mysterious mammals. I am one of them, I am a Humpback Whale. My mamma is one of the most beautiful ones in my group. But my dad is one of the biggest, strongest, and bravest ones. I am the smallest and the weakest, nobody really thinks that I should be there except for my mom… her name is Tarana. And my name is Lele, the wondrous and curious one!
Our group is very fast… well I am only a newborn calf, so they seem fast to me at least. I am one of the only calves here, because we have been swarmed by many killer whales, and they have captured many of my cousins, friends, sisters, brothers, and unknown friends. I am very treasured to the herd. They treasure me more than anything in the ocean! But, calves are not the only ones that are slowly leaving us… mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, cousins, friends, aunts, uncles, and adults are being ‘tongued’ by the monster of the air! These metal monsters are coming from all over the sea! Murdering family members and friends with their tongues, that are so sharp, they can pierce through the toughest of the male whales!
Let me give you a quick tour of my home, and how my life goes every day!
The Killer Whales and Metal Monsters!
“Yawn, mamma, when are we going to be there,” I asked my mom as I bumped against her warm leathery skin that kept me warm at night.
“We will get there in time Lele, in time.” Mother Tarana answered me tiredly.
“Will we be safe today… from the… you know!” I asked her cautiously.
“I can’t make any promises to you sweaty, I can’t make any promises. The…” Tarana looked around with her giant eyes to search the surroundings first, “The… the Metal Monsters have been showing up a LOT, lately… and now one knows where they birth, because they show up everywhere around this wide ocean. Even the eldest, and wisest can’t seem to figure them out… they are just murderous, metal beasts, that shouldn’t even be here!” Tarana mumbled annoyed and angered in the same moments. “But we will be alive for another day Lele… I will promise you that.” She said as she looked shyly around at the top of the water’s edges cautiously.
“Why are you scared, mamma?” Lele asked her silent mother as I rolled over onto my back. “Can I”- I was cut off by another metal tongue that stung the water and sent me swirling away from the strong current that swirled around my and carried me away! I searched hard, until my eyes burned, and then I suddenly realized that all the water around me… was red with blood!!! All of the sudden, I realized that I was farther away from my mother than I ever have in my whole life! I was scared till’ I was terrified! I couldn’t stand it any longer, I screamed in terror as I swirled, and twirled in circles… but I never found my mom. “Where are you…? I can’t live without you! Momma, I am scared, don’t leave me!!!” The alones took me over and I burst into tears, I was alone with no one in the whole, wide, ocean.
Later, I found my cousin Harry, floating at the top of the sea. I wept because I knew that he would not be the only one which the tongue would have caught. She quickened her pace, for the water was calm, but the blood was fresher here. So her search continued for anybody who could be left of her herd… especially, her beloved mother.
Eventually she made a sad list of the whales who had been ‘tongued’ by the Metal Monsters in her head; cousin Harry, aunt Elana, a friend of her mother’s named Nempta, Nempta’s husband named Lurrd, Mary their calf, and she just found a whale that she remembered seeing, but didn’t know of the name. She became gloomier and angrier as she grew to learn that the Metal Monsters could never be trusted… and would never stop coming.
