Apologetics
Its not complicated really, no matter what they tell you. If you believe that 2+2=4, then you believe in truth as absolute. 2+2 is 4 for everyone, everywhere. It is the absolute truth that when 2 groups of 2 objects are brought together, the numerical value of the unity is 4. It is the same truth for everyone, everywhere, always. You cannot have your “own” truth where this is concerned. You cannot say “my truth is that 2+2 =5″, and still have it be true. You CAN say it, you can yell it from the rooftops if you like. You can get a huge group of “fivers” togethers and make billboards and have meetings and even make laws about it, but it will not change the ultimate, exclusive truth of 2+2=4. That is the nature of truth , it does not change, it is absolute. It is the reason buildings stand up and the reason you can figure out what your bank balance is. It is the reason you know what time to show up for work and how your doctor knows where to put the scalpel so that he will cut out the cancerous tumor instead of your heart. It is the reason you can pump gas into your car and the reason you can find the produce section of the grocery store. Truth orders our life and makes it livable. When you start to try and live as though the “absolute” part of the truth does not exist you will end up with chaos and life will become much less livable. Life minus truth equals death.
Here comes the part where some people will start having a real problem.
Place the word God in for “truth.” That’s right, put the word “God” in as a synonym for truth. This is not an arbitrary move:
1) The bible says “In the beginning was the word, and the WORD WAS GOD” (John 1:1)
2) “the sum of your WORDS IS TRUTH” (psalm 119)
3) Christ said “I AM THE TRUTH” (john 14:6)
So,according to the Bible” truth” is the word, the word is god, and god is truth. If you will not grasp this basic point, you will forever lock yourself out of knowing real truth. The Word IS God, and God IS truth.
God, Word, Truth.
Father, Son, Holy Spirit.
John 16:13 promises ” when the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you to all truth” The implications of this are awesome, and they strain the limits of human abilities such as understanding and articulation. And yet, we are still supposed to try. Paul exhorted Timothy to be someone who worked hard to “rightly divide the word of truth” (2 Timothy 15) In other words, separate the truth into the correct ideas so that its unified message is correctly perceived, divide it into 2+2 so that the 4 is correctly grasped as 4, and NOT 5.
This ability to distinguish 4 from 5 is one of the first blessings bestowed upon the world by God. He set up this world according to the law of non-contradiction, the principle that “A is never not-A,” something is never what it is not. In the very beginning He separated the heavens from the earth and the land from the water and the day from the night. The sky was not the earth, the land was not the water and the day was not the night. He created light to be opposite from the dark, not interchangeable with it. From the beginning God gave us absolute truth, something is never ( notice the never) what it is not. He set up the entire physical world according to this basic law, this very evident law. Paul points this out in Romans 1:20, when he says “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.”
We were meant to know the truth, we were never meant to make up other truths because we denied the real truth. Another way of saying this would be: we were meant to know God, we were never meant to make up other Gods because we denied the real God. Proverbs 8:33-36 says “Whoever finds me finds life, But whoever fails to find me harms himself; all who hate me love death.” If you walk away from absolute truth, you walk away from God, if you do that you are left with… death. God gave us truth as evident in the world, we were meant to use it to find him. Jeremiah 29 :13-14, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the LORD, “and will bring you back from captivity.” Because until we find Him we are frozen outside of Him, left to the mercy of His opposite, the Not-God. “I am the life”, said Christ, which makes His opposite death. Life minus God equals death.
The absolute truth of 2+2=4 is a gift from God placed irrevocably in the world as a compass facing true north so that we could find it and follow it to its logical conclusion. You can of course walk south or west or east if you choose, because He gave you the gift of free will too. He also gave you the intelligence to count the cost of your decisions, because you are choosing between life and death.
“But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life. “
(2 corinthians 2:14-16)
