In this world you will have trouble-John 16:33 NIV
When something has gone astray in your life, how many times have you been told “you need to persevere” (Hebrews 10:36 NIV)? Probably more times than you can remember! It’s certainly easier to let those words flow out of our mouths than it is to put them into practice.
In order for us to practice perseverance we have to understand what it means first. Perseverance means to continue in one’s actions or beliefs in spite of a problem arising. In other words we keep riding on the road despite pot holes, uneven gravel and or debris. Or we just “keep on keeping on” as mentioned by various artists such as New Riders of the Purple Sage, Jo Jo and Jack Ingram.
Perseverance produces character and hope (Romans 5:4 NIV) which in-turn gives us the ability to stand firm in faith (2 Corinthians 16:13 NIV). By persevering we not only gain character and hope but we also grow more confident of God’s grace. Although this life will not always be smooth sailing and “easy like Sunday morning” (Lionel Richie), God however will remain faithful (Deuteronomy 7:9 NIV) so persevere I say.
