The Scars of Life
Ella was a music teacher, she had her own studio apartment, a car and a church that she loved, from the appearances, it seemed she had everything she wanted in life, but Ella also held a secret, she had epilepsy. Ella was having seizures on a regular basis which she kept a secret from almost everyone, until one fateful day that would change her life forever. One morning she had a grand mal seizure while driving to work, her car was smashed up pretty badly, pinning her legs against the hot motor of the car. She had deep burns to her legs. She eventually lost her Drivers license for life as a result of the accident, since driving with this condition while having seizures so regularly was not legal. I just happened to meet her a few years ago the around the corner from where I lived. We talked for a few minutes, updating each other on our present lives. Ella teaches part time and has another part time job as well. Her scars of not ever being able to drive again for life are a constant reminder that everyone comes away with some type of scar in this life. 2 Corinthians 4:16 -For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish yet the inward man is renewed day by day. Just as Ella has burns, she still goes on with her walk with Christ. Ella will always carry the burn scars, but this verse is an encouraging reminder that this life is not all there is.
Application: What scars are you carrying, emotional, physical, mental, spiritual? I use to think that only some people have scars of living life in an imperfect world, which of course is not true, we all have some reminder that our bodies decay and break down and troubles come. Jesus has scars as well, after his resurrection, he saw Thomas, he invited Thomas to touch his hands and side as proof of his scars. Jesus wants to take our pain, he said, Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest-Matthew 11:28 The problem is too often we take our scars and worries back after we give them to him.
Prayer: LORD it is so easy to think I am alone with the scars of life, help me to remember that even you have scars from being crucified, from life on this imperfect earth. Help me to realize while I live here, I will have scars, physical, emotional and other scars, but they can remind me that while my outward person may decay, my inward person is renewed daily just as 2 Corinthians 4:16 states, In Jesus name I pray amen.
