THE BESTEST
During my teaching career I was privileged to teach a group of 5 and 6-year-olds, the first year of elementary school. One of the precious memories I have is of a little boy whom I will call Carl. He was very tiny and had a sweet smile that would endear anyone. On one of those occasions when he came up to my table for individual reading he said to me: “My daddy is the biggest daddy in the world. He is so big he reaches to the sky!”
“Really?” I asked, intrigued now.
“Yes,” he replied, vigorously nodding. “He could beat all these children in this class, my daddy could do anything. He is the bestest.”
I was touched by his loyalty, his devotion, his hero worship. You could see he was a believer. My adult mind could not understand the reaching to the sky bit, but I know it was real to Carl, there was no doubt about this. I almost envied his passion.
I guess one of the reasons why such an impression was made on me, was because I knew the father in question. By all appearances he was an adulterer, not a consistently responsible father and even absented himself from the home on occasions, siring other children.
What I learnt is that none of those things mattered to that little boy, what mattered was that he was his father. In retrospect, maybe Carl’s size caused him to feel vulnerable so he took comfort and refuge in his father’s. Whatever the reason, we do well to emulate his zeal, his unwavering faith and confidence. We do well to have that same confidence in our God. He indeed reaches to the skies, He can do anything. Why do we cower, why do we worry, why do we try to live our lives as if we were orphans? We try to climb every mountain, cross every ocean and fix every problem for ourselves.
Let’s learn from Carl. Let’s make Jesus Christ our Hero for He is the bestest of the best.
