EXT. NEW YORK - NIGHT
In the sky, high above the state of New York…moving quickly across the country over different states. Suddenly, thunder is heard, lighting flashes across the sky as clouds form, misty… A silver streak fly across the sky. Storm lands on the balcony of her room. We descend to and through the ground into the sub-basement of the X-Mansion, now looking at Jean lying in bed, hooked to monitors. Jubilee holds her hand. Beast’s wounds are being wrapped up by Cyclops.
She exerted a large amount of energy Scott. She’s more tired than wounded.
Is the baby alright?
Yes. Although Jean was under a terrible amount of stress that could cause harm to the child…the baby is resilient. I found no ill-effects…
She’s not going back out there Hank…no more missions, that is it! I don’t care if we have to tie her down to the bed.
I agree…but knowing Jean Grey we may very well have to.
Jubilee begins to walk away.
I know Jean will be fine Scott…don’t worry.
Things are different now…she has to understand that! I will not lose her or our child. I will not! We have to find these people and put an end to their operations before they cause more chaos.
Our baby needs his father…
This is “our” baby. I can’t do this by myself…
Cyclops walks to her side…
What are you asking me to do?
Be Scott Summers…not Cyclops…not the leader of the X-Men.
Honey…this battle isn’t over yet…
Yes it is. For us…it is. This battle should be over for all of us Hank.
(tears fall down her face)
I want my life to be normal!
I don’t wanna do this anymore!
I risked my life over and over and I may lose it if I do this again. My baby’s life will be gone, my marriage will be over, I can’t be happy…!
Sweetie, sweetie…look at me…I’m not going to let that happen…
I’m tired Scott…I am tired!
(she begins to cry in his arms)
In the background, the other X-Men stand in silence. Professor Xavier enters the room, his “chair” floating across the floor. Jubilee leans on a wall behind him.
I invite you all to stay here as long as you’d like. Although this is the most well-known facility for mutants, it is also the most protected. I cannot ask you and do not wish for you to go on any new missions. I believe the only way we can win this new battle is to let people lead the way. I have already contacted the current administration, letting them know…the X-Men are no more. This school will continue to accept students, but none of them will be trained to become future X-Men.
What happens…if things get worse…if these people attack again?
They will have to come to us…I will not send you out to them.
I never thought you’d say something like this…
I feel that we are more human than we thought. Dinner is almost ready, if any of you, at least, would like something to eat before you leave.
Xavier exits the room. The X-Men look around at each other, finding themselves in unfamiliar territory.
Hank, what are you thinking?
Though, I am not happy about being shot at....
You want to walk away?
I guess I could get something to eat…
They all give a faint smile, Jean gets off the bed, Scott moves to stop her, but thinks better of it. Jean Grey and Jubilee go arm in arm towards the door along with Cyclops and Beast following. Storm is in the doorway, waiting for them with open arms. No one wants to talk about what happened that night.
INT. WASHINGTON D.C.
A phone conversation is taking place…
BENJAMIN TURNER (SEC. OF DEF.)
I want you to keep a lid of this, I mean everybody! No leaks to the press, nothing! Intel has to confirm these findings before we take any kind of action.
The Captain is back in New York City on a secure line…
Sir, what should we do about the scene?
Make sure your men keep those areas locked down tight! Use as many men as you need!
If this gets out…I don’t have to tell you about the media frenzy…
Sir, I agree…
Do what you have to. I’ll brief the President aSAP and remember, no journalists, no photographers, no camera crews…
My men have already set up perimeters. We have a second team scouting the areas to make sure they’re clear.
Will this work?
Sir, most of the people fled the scene on their own, to get away from the explosions. We’re focused on “keeping” the streets clear.
Good work Captain…you and your men are to be commended.
Thank you sir.
The Secretary of Defense hangs up the phone. The Captain pauses to take an incoming call on his radio…
VOICE (O.S. SPEAKER)
The mobile lab has the results on the wire…they want you to confirm…
I’m on my way
(turns to the other soldiers)
I don’t know how well connected these people are. Make sure everybody stays awake, you got me?
I’m going to the lab. Let’s hope we’re wrong…
The Captain jumps into the heavily armored jeep and the driver pulls away. The rest of the National Guard stand ready, guns drawn, night vision scopes showing, snipers on the roofs looking over the area, making sure pictures aren’t taken and no threat is approaching.
INT. THE X-MANSION - NIGHT
We move into a street light, all goes white and pulls out from a lamp in the X-Mansion as some of the X-Men pack their dinner “to go.”
Leaving so soon…?
I have to go…if I do not leave now I will be out there looking for those men before I realize it.
You do?! Because I don’t.
Ororo…our habits are hard to change. And your instincts take over. But you realize now…that your life is more than…this, what it has been before.
Storm slams the knife down on the counter, turns, leans against the counter and begins to cry. Xavier puts his hand on her arm. Ororo gives him a quick hug and kiss on the cheek, then turns and walks quickly out of the kitchen. Xavier hears the wind pick up and thunder roar in the sky. Storm is leaving.
Xavier turns to see the other X-Men following suit. Beast, Jubilee, Cyclops, and Jean Grey, each with food in hand, they said their good-byes to the Professor. Some smiled and laughed, others were silent and cried…but one by one, they left out the door. They scattered in different directions.
The Professor sat in his chair, in the front doorway, watching his X-Men, his former X-Men, go out to live lives of their own. His tears began to fall, but as his head is bowed down, a smile appeared on his face, he looks up. In his heart, he knows this is a new chapter in itself.
He goes down to the sub-basement, to each room, shutting off the lights, the power grids, the Danger Room, the medical facility, the War Room, and finally the hanger bay holding the X-Jet.
Taking the elevator back upstairs, he “floated” to his own room, slid out of the chair into his bed and under the covers. He looked out the window with wonderment on his face about what the next day would bring…then slowly drifts off the sleep.
