Pen v. Sword: Not Your Typical Analysis
I define “the Pen” as more than a tool for writing; further defined, the Pen is the writer, the act of writing, and what is written by the writer.
I define “the Sword” as anything formed or communicated by the Pen. Every story, character, plot, tone, message, or word that comes from the Pen is the Sword. The Sword can be a weapon, a device for accomplishing some means, or a simple pass time.
So the question stands: Is the Pen mightier than the Sword?
Does an author have more power than his/her written work? Can what is written have more power or effect than who wrote it? Can a story have more influence than the author of such story? Can a word have more meaning than the ability to write? The question simplified is this: Which is mightier, the writer, or what is written?
My input is as follows. The Pen is the avenue through which the Sword is launched. The Pen, intrinsically accomplishes little; the Sword does the hard part. Now, credit can be and is usually given to the Pen, but the actual power lies in the Sword.
An example to support my view can be seen in Christianity. What is more powerful and effective, a Christian speaking the Gospel or the Gospel itself? The answer is obviously the Gospel. The Gospel can be defined as the Sword since Christians communicate the Gospel. The Pen (a Christian) communicates the Sword (the Gospel). The Christian can claim nothing in this process, and, for fear of being proud, should not.
A response to some concerns follow. God's position in this analysis can be misunderstood. He is above this viewpoint, as he is the creator of all. God is not part of the Sword; the Sword describes and attests to God, but He is not the Sword. Also, Christians obviously do not create the Gospel; however, they certainly form the way the Gospel is communicated. Christians are not mightier than the Gospel
So the answer to the question is: No, Pens are not mightier than the Sword.

Unique POV Stephen King want out of his way to prove your point. He submitted several stories under a pen name to see if people would like the story as much not knowing it was his.
Very good argument. Certainly a different way of looking at this saying:)
Interesting take on the topic. I think it's well-written and convincing.
Great article, Travis.
This is quite an interesting analysis. (You've given me something to think about.) Thanks for posting this.
