A Divine Retainer
"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." (Proverbs 4:23).
Every night Mom removed her partials and placed her teeth in a retainer. It provided her a safe place to keep them. She also put a tablet and water in this retainer to cleanse her teeth.
God also provides us a retainer for safekeeping. This retainer is our hearts, the center of our beings. It is the place God made for us to keep the Word of God. As our life-blood flows through our physical hearts, life springs from our spiritual heart as well¯—eternal life.
The things that really matter in life emanate from the heart—the issues of life and death: Heaven and Hell. All who believe on Christ with the heart receive eternal life. However, all who die rejecting Christ with the heart will face the second death—the lake of fire. This death torments, never ends, and separates from God forever.
When we retain the Word in our heart, it keeps us from sin. It delivers us from the snares of the wicked. The Lord delivers those who trust in Him and walk in His ways. Through the Word, we learn His ways and increase our faith.
God will deliver us from the snares that the enemy sets for us. The net will wrap around the head of those who oppose the gospel.
Oh God, forgive me when I neglect my divine retainer. Help me to keep Thy Word in my heart and to walk with Thee. In Jesus' name. Amen.
