EXT. SUBURBAN NEIGHBORHOOD - NIGHT

Two teenagers are walking down the street with their bicycles.

SARAH
I had so much fun tonight…

JUSTIN
Me too…I was…

SARAH
What…?

JUSTIN
Kinda scared you were gonna turn me down.

SARAH
Well…I'm glad you asked anyway… I'll see you later?

JUSTIN
I'm supposed to walk "you" home…

SARAH
You know better than that. My dad would freak…

JUSTIN
I know, I know. I'm just saying…I want to…

SARAH
…thanks…bye…

JUSTIN
Tomorrow…?!

SARAH
Well…I can't really…

JUSTIN
Oh…
SARAH
I don't mean…it's not you, it's just…my dad…he…

JUSTIN
No, I understand…

SARAH
Justin…

MRS. WARE
Hey Sarah!

SARAH
Hi Mrs. Ware!
(pause)
um…I got him home safe…

JUSTIN
What?!

MRS. WARE
(laughing)
Thank you dear.

JUSTIN
Mom?! Please don't encourage her…

MRS. WARE
Have a good night sweety…tell your folks I said "Hi."

SARAH
I will…

MRS. WARE
You'll be alright going home by yourself?

SARAH
Yeah, I'm fine…thanks. Good night…

MRS. WARE
Good night.

Back on her bicycle, SARAH begins to ride back home.

SARAH
(sigh)
I can't believe this. I'm gonna lose the only guy I've ever really liked 'cause my dad is…

Suddenly, she begins to feel awkward…so much so she nearly falls to the side. She walks for a little ways, with her bicycle at her side.

Now, on the side of a road, nighttime, hazy air, street lights illuminate the area, Sarah knows "something" is wrong…her stomach begins to churn; she feels "something" running through her veins; her heart feels like it's moving a hundred miles per hour.

A faint glow shows through her rib cage.

SARAH
Oh my gosh…! What's…?!

The wind swirls around her, dust is kicked up into the air. Her skin begins to change color, dark grey spots spreading beneath the surface.

SARAH
No, no, no! This can't be happening…!

She grabs her bike and starts to run into the woods.

Suddenly, electrical currents are moving from within her to her bike handles. She lets out a scream for a moment, then catches herself, running deeper into the woods.

In the distance, she can see houses, lights turning on inside. She stays low, being as quiet as she can be. But the "energy" flowing through her veins is getting stronger, she feels like she's going to explode.

To her surprise, her veins in her arms began to illuminate ever so faintly.

Sarah starts to cry…because she knows…

SARAH
Oh my gosh…oh my gosh. No, no, don't do this. Not to me. Not to me…!

Beams from flashlights are in the distance. Sarah knows she has to leave, get home as soon as she can, but "home"…may not be the best place to go now for Sarah Johnson.

Without a word, she grabs her bike and runs through the woods, trying to keep a level head and see through her tears.

To the back of her house now, she stays low as she puts her bicycle in the garage. She hears her father upstairs talking on the telephone.

SHAWN
Yeah, I know…I'm looking at the news right now.
(pause)
No, no, this is far from over. Trust me. The plans we've come up with have already been set in motion.
(pause)
Well, we saw it coming.
(pause)
Look..!
(pause)
Don't worry about it okay. I know what I'm doing. We're capable of doing the job well, that's why you hired us. I gotta go.
(Hangs up the cell phone)

Sarah rushes upstairs.

SHAWN
Honey, come here for a sec…I want you to see this…

No Answer.

SHAWN
Sarah.
(long pause)
Sarah!

SARAH
I can't talk right now dad…I'm…I'm busy…

SHAWN
Sarah…you know good and well I don't play games.
(heads upstairs)
Open the door.

SARAH
I…

SHAWN
Open the door.

Door opens.

SHAWN
What's going on?

SARAH
Nothing.
(long pause)
I'm fine.

SHAWN
Where's Justin?

SARAH
Dad, no! He got home first, I came home by myself.
(pause)
His mom says "Hi".

SHAWN
(sigh)
Sarah, we live here because we have to live here. It's a great cover. You know how important my job is…

SARAH
I know…I…

SHAWN
And if anyone wants to get to me, they'll try to harm you. You should be grateful I let you go out tonight…

SARAH
I am! Dad, I'm fine!

SHAWN
You've been crying haven't you?

SARAH
I…

SHAWN
What happened?

SARAH
Nothing!
(pause)
I…I'm sorry…
SHAWN
Were you harassed by a mutant, Sarah?

SARAH
(sigh)
No…

SHAWN
Don't give me that tone. I will have my men protect you if they have to.

SARAH
Dad…!

Shawn's cell phone rings.

SHAWN
I have to take this call. I'm going to check on your little friend too.

SARAH
He didn't…!

SHAWN
This conversation is over! Good night.

Mr. Johnson goes downstairs, talking on the phone rather quietly. Sarah closes the door and looks into the bathroom mirror. No signs of illumination or the dark grey blemishes under her skin. She seemed perfectly normal…but the moment was gone…she felt currents of energy through her veins, she tried not to panic this time. She had seen the signs before…but through other people…

SARAH
Oh…no…I'm…I'm…a mutant… My dad…my…dad…is going to…kill me…

At the thought, all the lights in the house flickered, electricity-like currents went over Sarah's body, but she felt no pain…only…life…power…freedom. She fell to the floor, not knowing what was going to happen next… Her father was in her room, at the bathroom door…

SHAWN
Sarah, open the door…

The lights flickered again, a rush of electricity could be heard…Sarah was crying.

SHAWN
Sarah, open this door right now.
(Silence)
Open it or I'm coming in!

Sarah heard from the other side of the door. She got up, looked into mirror. Beams of violet, electricity-like currents randomly moved over her skin before she felt it settle down again. A familiar knock at the door…her father…she opened the door to see…

SARAH
(gasp/scream)

SHAWN
Sarah, I have to explain something to you…

Sarah stared in disbelief, as her father, head of the FREEDOM force against the mutant race, stood in the doorway in another form. Skin extremely dark purple, almost black. His eyes illuminating a white light with a hint of violet. She recognized the electric-like currents randomly flowing across his skin. She let out a scream, then held her hand over her mouth. Her mother came to the doorway, in normal form.

HEATHER
Sarah…honey, it's okay…

SARAH
It's okay? It's okay?! You guys are mutants and you're the ones trying to kill them all! How is that…?

SHAWN
Enough!
(His body reforms back to its human self)
I didn't want this to happen. I was hoping it didn't happen…it's that "gene"…

SARAH
Mom, you're a mu…

HEATHER
No. I'm not… We knew what the odds were. We didn't want to have any children but…you came and…we couldn't just… We wanted to keep you…

SARAH
Now look at me, what am I?!...a…

SHAWN
You're our daughter!

SARAH
(backing away, beginning to cry)
Are you gonna kill me?
(silence)
You have to. It's what you do, what you've always done!

SHAWN
Sarah, we're not going to kill you. But we clearly have a problem on our hands now.

SARAH
You are the problem..!

The literal GLARE from her father's eyes stopped Sarah in her tracks. A knock at the door…

SHAWN
It's late. We will finish this discussion in the morning. I have work to do, setup for tomorrow.

Consoling the neighbors about the brief power outage, Shawn sends everyone home.

BILL
You know what I think…
(waving a beer bottle around)

SHAWN
Yes?

BILL
One of those mutants must be living around here…

SHAWN
Bill…

BILL
I know it! Whenever weird stuff starts happening, it's a mutant around somewhere!

SHAWN
I have to go now Billy…

BILL
When I find 'em, I'm turning them in…every last one of them. I'll help you look for them, you know…

SHAWN
A nice gesture. But there's nothing to worry about. Good night.

BILL
Uhh, yes sir, good night.

Shawn closes the door.

HEATHER
Why do you put up with him? He knows too much!

SHAWN
He doesn't know anything and if he said something about us, the mutants would've been here by now. Besides…civilians aren't as easy to get rid of.

HEATHER
What are we going to do about Sarah?

SHAWN
SSShhh…

HEATHER
Shawn…

SHAWN
Hm. Something I didn't want to plan for. Keep her away from Xavier. The other mutants shouldn't be a threat.

HEATHER
Is that enough…?
(pause)
Is it?

Silence.

INT. RUSSIAN UNDERGROUND FACILITY - NIGHT

The room is dark, faint light around the place, just enough to illuminate the metal skin of Colossus. His eyes have a faint glow to them.

Nightcrawler is in the area, looking around from a higher position, clinging against the wall. Colossus senses for any kind of radiation or something suspicious. He comes to an area with containers, the covers are made of glass, with a bit of frost on the inside and surface. But they aren't activated…and they are empty.

The place has been kept up but nothing looks like it's been in use. Nightcrawler has teleported to different rooms, all seem kept up, but empty. Not recently in use. Last, he hangs from a small beam on the ceiling, upside down, looking over Colossus' head. He lands upright, shaking his head to say, "nothing suspicious has been found."

Colossus pauses, with an uneasy feeling in his gut, but without proof, any charges against the Russian government will be dismissed. An angry frown comes over his metal face, he turns back to Nightcrawler who dismissed his own frustrations. He puts his hand on Colossus' shoulder and they teleport out of the facility.

INT. NEW YORK CONDO – BEDROOM - NIGHT

Cyclops and Jean Grey lay in bed in the middle of the night back home in their own place. Cyclops holds Jean in his arms, but she is not facing him. They both wonder if the other is falling asleep, but neither of them can sleep. They've been laying there awake for almost two hours. Eyes open, staring into "space" disgusted by the reason why they can't sleep. Finally, they want to break the silence…

JEAN
I know.

CYCLOPS
I can't do this anymore.

JEAN
Me either.

CYCLOPS
I don't want to lead people into anymore battles.

JEAN
I don't want you to.

CYCLOPS
I want a family…a life of my own.

JEAN
So do I.

CYCLOPS
You're pregnant!
(pause)
I'm going to be a father…
(pause)
I can't risk my life like I used to, I have to be here for the baby.

JEAN
So why are we still awake?

Cyclops lets go of Jean, turns over, slams his arm on a pillow and sits up on the edge of the bed.

CYCLOPS
Because…I'm an X-Man.
