Elder Two is sat at a table, with a chair at opposite ends. There is a candlestick in the centre of the table. Elder One is stood. Elder two has papers to look through and things to keep himself busy...
ELDER ONE Can I talk to you about this letter?
ELDER TWO Absolutely, isn't it marvellous!
I was just reading it.
ELDER ONE So what do we do?
ELDER TWO About what?
ELDER ONE The letter.
ELDER TWO Oh the letter! Marvellous isn't
ELDER ONE Yes but what do we do next?
ELDER TWO What do you mean? It speaks for
itself! Have you seen how much He has commended
ELDER ONE Yes, I know it's great, but we-
ELDER TWO I mean, what a priviledge.
ELDER ONE Yes, but now we have things to
ELDER TWO Pardon?
ELDER ONE Well I thought
that...well...considering we're...didn't you
read all of it?
ELDER TWO Of course I did.
ELDER ONE So you see what needs to change?
ELDER TWO Yes, but look at all the good
ELDER ONE I know, it's great that He's
good enough to show us how blessed we are, but
He also said we need to change a few things.
ELDER TWO I was hoping you would say that!
ELDER ONE Good, well -
ELDER TWO You saw how pleased He was with
all our hard work? Our discernment. Our
outreach, Oh, speaking of which, I've been
thinking about re-vamping it.
ELDER ONE How do you mean?
ELDER TWO Well I've been thinking over one
or two things. Just the other night, you know.
Getting more people in. Doing more stuff.
ELDER ONE OK, that's great but we should
ELDER TWO Kick up a notch.
ELDER ONE What?
ELDER TWO You know. Get more stuff going.
Keep that Kingdom coming!
ELDER ONE Right, well I - we need to -
ELDER TWO Keep teaching sound doctrine!
Exactly. He said He knows how much work we put
into getting sound doctrine from the pulpit. He
said 'I acknowledge your hard work, your
patience, how you can't stand evil'.
ELDER ONE Yes, I realise that but it's not
ELDER TWO Not all there is to do, I know.
There's more. We have to keep up!
Elder Two's mobile rings.
Oh Excuse me. (he answers) Hello, Elder J here.
What can I do for you? Oh really...OK well have
you spoken to them about it? And what did they
say? Mmm hmm, indeed, yeah...and you need me
to...? OK well we mustn't be judgemental.
They're important members of the Body. OK, I'll
address it, yes. All right well I'll bare that
in mind...no, nothing...oh OK, sure. Is that
all? Yep. Yep, absolutely that's no problem at
all. OK. God bless you. Bye bye now.
ELDER ONE Who was that?
ELDER TWO Confidential.
ELDER ONE Look, I think there's stuff happening in the Church that doesn't belong, and people aren't being warned.
ELDER TWO Warned about what?
ELDER ONE Well, Jesus wants people to know
when something is wrong. He's written this
letter to show us what's good, but also how we
need to -
ELDER TWO Yes, yes, yes. I know, there's
so much to do!
ELDER ONE True. But Jesus has written that
something isn't right, and if we don't fix it
then He'll take away our -
ELDER TWO Look, times are changing. We
must keep up. We push on, press in and keep
going! Keep moving forward.
ELDER ONE But we mustn't forget about why
we're doing this!
ELDER TWO But He likes our work.
ELDER ONE Yes, which is great. He wants us
to know about the good things, but there's -
ELDER TWO See, you said it yourself. Let's
focus on the good stuff. Hold fast to what is
ELDER ONE Look, I'm not the one who wrote
this. He says our love is diminishing. Your not
listening, we have to change this, before we
continue. We can't ignore what needs to change.
ELDER TWO But things are changing.
ELDER ONE But you're not focussing on what
Jesus has said, about the love. The first love.
Our love for Him.
ELDER TWO I'm sure He will appreciate the
work going on. I'm developing things for the
better. We need to be more socially engaging,
ELDER ONE But this is Jesus' Church, not
ELDER TWO He's put us in charge of His
ELDER ONE No, He's put Himself in charge
of us. Look we've forgotten who's Church this
is. We've stopped reaching upwards for Christ,
and seeking His love for Him and one another.
We're too busy!
ELDER TWO I'm not sure that's true.
ELDER ONE It is, we've got so busy
planning our version of doing things, but our
hearts are on the wrong thing. The love is –
well it's dying. Jesus said we've got to get the
ELDER TWO And we will. We've got some
great stuff planned over the coming weeks.
ELDER ONE But Jesus is asking us to go
back to basics, back to the first works, to
listen to Him now. He says in His letter 'He
who has ears, let him hear'.
ELDER TWO Well I'm sure once I let Him
know of this great stuff we've got planned it
ELDER ONE You're not listening. Jesus is
coming if we don't start listening to what He
has to say. And if we don't listen, He says we
won't even know when He arrives!
ELDER TWO Don't be stupid. This is Jesus
you're talking about, of course we'll know when
ELDER ONE Not according to this letter. It says 'you won't know the hour that I will come'
KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK!
What was that?
ELDER TWO What?
ELDER ONE That knocking?
ELDER TWO I didn't hear anything.
ELDER ONE No, listen!
KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK! -Elder One recognises it straight away.
ELDER TWO I don't hear anything.
ELDER ONE It's Him.
ELDER TWO What?
KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK!
ELDER ONE It's Him!
ELDER TWO Who?
ELDER ONE Jesus!
ELDER TWO What? Don't be stupid. He'd call
first. He knows how busy I am.
ELDER ONE You're not listening.
ELDER TWO There is nothing to listen to.
(his mobile rings) Excuse me...(he answers the phone) hello?
THE SCENE COULD END HERE...or...
Elder Two continues with a discussion on his phone. While elder one answers the door. Elder one and Jesus walk up to the table.
ELDER TWO Jesus! Hello! (to voice on the phone) Hang on just a minute. (to Jesus) Sorry Jesus, give me two minutes, I'll just take this over there. We've got some great stuff to chat about!
He takes the phone away to finish his conversation. Jesus watches, looking disappointed. Then He walks up to the table and picks up the candlestick. Jesus puts His arm around Elder One, and leads him out the door.
