“What were you thinking?" Shouted my mother, as the last kid went out the door.
"I told you a few, how many is a few?” I lowered my head as the tears began to caress my little cheeks.
“I didn’t know who to leave out,” I mustered through a quivering jaw.
Mom Looked at Dad. He just couldn’t hide the grin. They both busted out laughing.
“Well you certainly made up for all the ones that you’ve missed, chuckled Mom,
Next time I’ll make you a list!”
It was my eighth birthday. Halloween is not the best day to expect a birthday party, but that’s just what happened. I had never had a party of my own, so mom said that I could invite a few kids home for cake and ice cream. With 22 sets of eyes staring at you who do you eliminate, so I invited the entire class, including my teacher.
As they all began filing through our front door like little tin soldiers my mother almost fainted! She dispatched Dad to the local grocery store for hot dogs, buns, potato chips and soda. “ See if they have any cakes and buy a couple of those as well,” said Mom shaking her head and forcing a smile.
Within a couple of hours the chaos ended and the kids left as fast as they came, after all it was Halloween and there were costumes to don and treats to be had.
It was my Mom’s plan to surprise me with a special birthday dinner for a few friends, and me, but the worm was turned and well “who surprised who?”
***********************
Sometimes life throws a few surprises our way, not only unexpected, but many times unwanted. Just remember my friend we have blessed assurance that there is one who is never taken by surprise. His Name is Jesus and He is surely by our side. So don’t sweat the small stuff, His Mom was also taken by surprise! Like the old hymn declares, “Blessed assurance Jesus is mine, oh what a foretaste of glory divine….”
Be blessed today. Who knows, a surprise may be on the way!
