The True Freedom Fighter
A plane flying into an IRS building, a shooting at Fort Hood, Terrorists being tried in civilian courts and soldiers dying on the battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan have dominated have dominated the newspaper headlines in recent years. History attests to a vast multitude of individuals who are willing to sacrifice themselves for their “cause.” But who are these people willing to sacrifice themselves? Why do they do it? And what do they think will be the result? Some call themselves freedom fighters. Some just die for freedoms sake. Some just die. We call them suicide bombers, kamikaze, martyrs, and soldiers.

Suicide Bombers
Suicide bombers have been around for many years. The state of Israel has put up with this menace for over 30 years. The radically devout Islamist will strap on a bomb vest and detonate it in a heavily populated area where the “infidels” are. Other forms of suicide bombings include using trucks, airplanes, backpacks, and even “pregnant” women. Upon death these extremists believe they will go to meet Allah and the Prophet Mohammed. They are rewarded with eternal life and numerous virgin women. Often the families are paid off for life by wealthy contributors in Saudi Arabia. The killing of civilian “infidels” is justified by extreme – but not mainstream – Islamist sects. Sacrifice to the radical Islamist is about the rewards in the afterlife.

During the last year of World War II the Allies fighting in the Pacific theatre found a new and deadly threat, the Japanese kamikaze. From out of the sky a Zero warplane, loaded with bombs, would come barreling towards an Allied ship. If the warplane hit its mark in the right place the ship would be sunk. Time and time again the Zeros would attack. Leyte Gulf was the first campaign involving a great number of kamikazes. At Okinawa 36 ships were sunk and 350 were damaged and 5,000 men were lost. Before the final flight of the kamikaze fighter, the squadron would meet for the ritual of rice wine and toasts to Japan their Emperor. The hope was that their mission would assist in the defeat of the United States. The Kamikaze like the suicide bomber commits the premeditated killing of others and themselves. Sacrifice to the Kamikaze is all about the glory.

The first Christian martyr as recorded in the New Testament was James who was beheaded by King Herod. From then on hundreds of thousands of Christians were persecuted and martyred off and on over the next three hundred years. In the middle ages during the Reformation, thousands, if not millions, of Protestant Christians perished at the stake for their beliefs. Today there are still Christian martyrs – Protestant and Catholic - around the world in Communist, Muslim, and other totalitarian regimes. Most often Christian martyrs are persecuted for their faith and after suffering public condemnation, scorn and violent intolerance, are brought up for execution. They are given the chance to recant and renounce their belief. Tertullian wrote during the second century that, “The blood of the martyrs is seed for the Church” and through the long years his words continue to be true. This has been the creed of martyrdom through the ages. While martyrs are not specifically allowing themselves to be put to death to recruit members to their cause, this is the inadvertent consequence. These Christians would rather renounce this earthly life to live eternally in the next, and will in no wise renounce their beliefs just to live this life and lose the next. Sacrifice to the Christian is about freedom of conscience and free exercise of one’s belief.

American Soldier:
The American soldier has been sacrificing his life for the cause of freedom since the Revolutionary war. Nathan Haley made famous for his “give me liberty or give me death” statement has been a rallying cry for freedom loves since that time. He knew he would die as a spy if caught behind British lines, but in spite of that gave his life for this cause. While he deliberated the pros and cons of his decision for a long period, most soldiers instantly make the decision to give their lives for their fellow soldiers and/or the mission. There is no premeditate desire to kill themselves for the cause. In the words of General Patton, “Let the other xxxxxx die for his county. You live for yours.” In a fleeting instant the soldier makes his decision. Whether it is by falling on a hand grenade, running into the enemy force with a machine gun, or some other act of bravery, it is always to save life or accomplish the mission which will result in the preservation of life and/or shorten the deadly conflict. Another characteristic of the American Soldier is that never has a Soldier committed suicide against the civilian population. For these Soldiers saving their buddies is the foremost reason, and often accomplishing the mission ranks a close second. Most Soldiers who kill themselves saving their buddies receive high medals and awards including up to the Medal of Honor. The family will get the life insurance of up to $400,000. This is not why they do it, however. Sacrifice to the American Soldier is about giving their all – even their life - so others may live.
There are many that look at all the “atrocities” that the American Soldier has “committed” over the years - Abu Grab, Japanese-American interment, carpet bombings, My Lai massacre - they often forget about the freedom that the American Soldier has provided for them and millions of others in the world. It is sad that some continually looks at the thorns and never see or feel the beauty and joy of the roses. While freedom and liberty are as attractive as a rose, they must be handled with much care and sacrifice. The American Soldier is a real Freedom Fighter.

The True Freedom Fighter
While the American soldier is a real Freedom Fighter, there is only One True Freedom Fighter that does not have any self made thorns, only roses of beauty and bliss. That Freedom Fighter sacrificed Himself not for the rewards in the after life – He is already eternal; not to obtain glory – He has it already; not for belief – He is truth; not to give to a few – He gave to all, no He sacrificed to save this fallen world.. That Freedom Fighter is Jesus Christ. Do you know Him?

May God grant us richly the grace to know that we also like Christ our King ought to fight the good fight of faith, not for the mundane gains of this world that come to nothing, but for the glory eternal we already have with Him. Thanks for this.
