I believe music is the expression of our soul taking flight to God’s hearing. This scripture makes me wonder; who started singing first? Did God hum a tune as He created the world? Was it the angels? Was it Adam and Eve in the Garden. Where did that wonderful Gift from God first express itself? We are not told that as far as I can tell. However, the Psalmist wrote of harps and trumpets, cymbals and psaltery, stringed instruments and organs. So, dear one, Israel was jumping with music. King David even played the harp.
So much worship can take place in music…corporate and private worship. The sounds of instruments in the church and the voices of the people lifted up in praise is a wonderful sound. When we are sad nothing can lift us up like beginning to sing praises. We sing first because we need to; then we sing because we want to. Our souls have been gladdened by the sound of our own praise to God. When we are happy we simply sing because it just spills out of our mouths!
It is said that music hath the charm to soothe the savage beast. Perhaps that is so. I do not really know. But this I do know, music can set our mood…either good or bad; up beat or down beat. Let’s fill our hearts and voices with praises to our God and enjoy one of the sweetest gifts this side of heaven. It may not sound good to our neighbor…but make it a joyful noise anyway. He will love it!
“Father, I lift my voice is praise to You right now. ‘Prepare me to be a Sanctuary’, full of the sounds of music that will honor and praise You all the days of my life. Thank You for the gift of music and for people who share it with their congregations every Sunday. Amen”
