“The Heart, The Flesh, The Fruit”
Part IIB: Sins of the Heart (Sins of Witchcraft and Idolatry)
By Sheila M. Herron
I believe that witchcraft and idolatry definitely tie in with each other. Witchcraft is becoming very popular with our youth today. It is important that we as Christian parents sit down with our children and spend time in the Word of God, because there are many negative influences out there.
The practice of witchcraft and sorcery is strongly condemned in the Bible
a. In the Old Testament - Exodus 22:18
b. In the New Testament - Revelation 21:8
PHARMAKEIA (witchcraft, sorcery, magic) is used in three ways:
a. Medically, the use of drugs with no bad meaning at all.
b. The misuse of drugs so as to poison, and not cure.
c. The practice of sorcery and witchcraft, which often uses
drugs to cast spells and alter the behavior of others.
Fortune Telling is another type of witchcraft; it lures people into the curiosity of knowing their future. The so called, “Psychic Hotlines” are pulling in the cash from poor confused souls and some not so confused. Consulting in the horoscopes is another form of witchcraft; it falls right up under fortune telling. As I stated earlier, this demonic force is after our youth, my oldest son was reading his school newsletter one day and I noticed that it included the horoscopes. As he read his, “zodiac sign”, I pointed out to him that he was delving into familiar spirits and that he should not open himself up for those types of demonic spirits.
God’s Word has all the answers both present and future we do not need to seek other sources.
Manipulation is another form of witchcraft. Women are taught from childhood how to manipulate their daddies and even little boys with their moms. The difference is girls use manipulation and boys use charm but they are both controlling spirits, which again stems from Jezebel and Ahab spirits. Jezebel is very manipulative and controlling, while Ahab on the other hand, appears to be mellow and laid back. Ahab actually has ulterior motives, he allows Jezebel to think that she is in control, while at the same time he is waiting for her to fall. When this happens, she will become insecure and dependent (but not submitting) upon him, allowing him to use her even more. People who grow up with this type of mind set generally think that they can talk their way into getting anything that they want by using their, “charm”.
I have always heard the old adage that you can get more bees with honey, but just recently I put that saying into perspective. What it is actually saying is, if we act real nice towards people, then we can get what we want. On the contrary, we are still using a form of manipulation because our motives are wrong, and that’s selfish ambition.
We should not seek to do good out of our own wants and needs, it should be genuine and without expectation. When we do things it should be to God’s glory and out of adoration for Him.
Let’s look at Idolatry: EIDOLOLATREIA
Many Christians unwittingly bring abominations into the home; statues of the Virgin Mary, different saints, Buddha statues, Shiva, carvings of tiki gods, books on the occult, fortune telling, stones and rocks from heathen temples, paintings of Roman and other gods, tarot cards, ceramic and macramé depictions of frogs, owls, dragons, and other demonic objects are often found in Christian homes, posing as art objects and decorations. Often enough, followers of strange religions who pray over their products and “bless” them have manufactured innocent objects.
These cursed things can bring strange diseases that doctors cannot diagnose, divorces, rebellious children, arguments, accidents, and oppression. Demons will not leave until the cursed objects are taken out of the house or destroyed. There are other times when people openly allow demonic forces to enter their home, by intentionally practicing witchcraft.
Sometimes we get attached to items, especially cultural ones without realizing that a lot of witchcraft was practiced and curses have been passed down through the generations and through the items that we consider artifacts. As a matter of fact, the attachment alone to these items show that they can cause us to worship (idolize) them. The Lord dealt with me on certain items also, I loved collecting African masks, statues and also Egyptian art. Before realizing the affects that they had on my home, I thought, as most others do, that these are just pieces of art and that if I have already anointed my home nothing would happen.
With the Holy Spirit’s guidance, I realized that these things were not healthy to have in my home. I had to break the soul ties with them so that my family and generations to come would not have to suffer the consequences. I know that in time God will replace those things with ones that He finds pleasing to Him.
We also can make people (entertainers, family, ministers, political figures) our idols. Anything that we place before God is an idol. Even television, when the “Attack on America” had taken place, I noticed how people were glued to the television watching the news. I even found myself getting caught up in watching it, when I should have been doing my cleaning and studying. Although it was a devastating incident and the news was keeping us posted by giving complete coverage, I realized that the enemy was using this as a distraction. If we stay in tune with the Holy Spirit, He will speak to us and we will know things. God’s Word says that He has given us the anointing to know all things. __1 John 2:20
Our desire should be to have a Holy temple and a heart that is free of guile, if it takes sacrificing things that are not of the Lord, then so be it.
“Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth” ___Colossians 3:2
