Psalm 119.24
Are you isolated?
“Your testimonies also are my delight; they are my counsellors.” [Psalm 119.24 NASB]
Have you ever found yourself in a spiritual predicament, where your main sources of fellowship, usefulness, learning, knowledge and understanding, all seemed to evaporate? If so? What did you do?
At this time in David’s life he had just received an answer to prayer, and at the same time, further light into the inner meaning of God’s word, and at the same time he was also experiencing exclusion and isolation.
This feeling of being cut-off from the influence and spiritual assistance of people is probably more common than we realize.
Has this ever happened to you? Did your telephone stop ringing? Were your numerous emails to friends never answered? Had the postman forgotten your address? Were you no longer invited to any meetings? And yet despite everything, you could not think of anything which you had done wrong. What do you do at that time?
When it was my uncomfortable lot in life, I personally found this situation very difficult to handle. What did David do when he was excluded from Christian fellowship, the likes of which he had previously been an essential and integral part of?
He did not sit and mope and bemoan his drastic, desperate and hopeless situation. What then did he do? He discovered - as you also will - that his delight was not to be in what was happening with people, but in what God had already said in His word.
Furthermore, David also recognized that he did not require the knowledge and experiences of men to encourage and fortify him, for God's word advised him in solving his problems and counselled him on the best of all possible paths to take in the future.
What if we could ask those who had decided to abandon David, "Where would you rather be just now"? Those who had forcefully excluded David from their presence would be sitting and bitterly regretting their wrong decision while David, on the other hand, would be seen sitting peacefully and very contentedly at the feet of the light-giver.
I know where I would rather be. Do you? [David McArdle]
