The Cost of Our Worship
“Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.” John 12.3
This morning, while praying about what I was to write to you today, I was reminded of this story. In my mind’s eye, I imagined the scene. Mary and Martha had just witnessed a miracle. Jesus had raised their brother Lazarus from the dead and they were overcome with joy and thankfulness for what the Lord had done. They were both overwhelmed by the emotion of the event and were showing their gratitude in the way they both knew best. Martha expressed her love by running around like a crazy women preparing a meal and serving everyone. (I know all of you women can relate to that!) This was her way of expressing to the Lord the magnitude of gratefulness she felt.
Then my attention was turned toward Mary. She was in such awe of Him! In remembrance of what the Lord had done for her, she did the most extravagant and outrageous thing she could think of! Her love for Jesus out-weighed the ridicule of man and the judgment of her critical observers. Mary took a pound of costly oil, worth one years’ salary, and poured it on the feet of Jesus! This was the most sacrificial, unselfish show of love Mary could give – she poured out her love on Him! Out of a heart full of gratitude, Mary sacrificed what most of us would not even consider giving. How many of us would shudder at the thought of giving up a years’ salary?
Now, this is not a lesson entirely about our money. My desire is for us to take a look at our hearts. What are you willing to sacrifice in order to show God your love? What is the most precious, costly thing you have? Are you willing to pour it out on the feet of Jesus as worship? Maybe your most precious possession is your time. Maybe you love to spend hours upon hours fishing or reading or watching the endless sports channels on television. The question I am posing to you today is, “are you willing to pour it out on the feet of Jesus?” The work of the ministry needs your time! His plan for the body of Christ will not ever see fruition if we are stingy with this valuable resource!
For some of us, the most valuable possession we could sacrifice would be our dreams. I have had some selfish ambitions that I have spent wasted energy trying to make happen. But when I decided that His ways are higher than my own and His plans greater than I could EVER dream of, I was able to pour them out as a sacrifice on the feet of Jesus. I made a decision to surrender to the purpose of God and let Him have His way in me! For some, this is the most difficult sacrifice. Our dreams and ambitions are precious to us. But let me tell you, He is worth the sacrifice! Do you love Him enough to give it all to Him, to lay our desires at His feet and fill the room with the fragrance of sacrificial love?
This is the heart of the Father for us; that we lay at His feet what is precious to us so He can in turn pour out blessings on us that we could never imagine! I pray our sacrifice would fill this earth with the fragrance of love and adoration for the King of kings, the lover of our souls, the One who gave us life and breath and blessings beyond measure! How much is He worth to you?

This is a very good explanation of what a sacrifice really and truly is. Good job.
