If we sail in a ship with unruly sailors, it will snag on the coral reefs. “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed” (Prov. 13:20). How can we escape from these bad-mouthed sailors? The Captain says, "Ask for wisdom. Then discretion and understanding will keep us. They will deliver us from evil men and women." See Proverbs 2:11-20.
Proverbs 2:12 mentions those who speak "froward things." What does froward mean? Such disobey God, act cross, unreasonable and wicked. People cannot get along with them. Take the example of Nabal, Abigail’s husband. God describes him as "churlish [rude] and evil in his doings" (1 Sam. 25:3). His wife calls him a "man of Belial" or the devil (1 Sam. 25:25).
Stay away from enticing sailors. The devil entices us or makes sin attractive to us. He uses flattery, motivation, and persuasion. He makes promises that He does not intend to keep. In all of this he uses people. Beware!
A violent person lures others into doing drastic things. He leads them into wrong paths and plans evil things. He speaks to accomplish his wicked plans. Avoid violent and angry people.
Asaph, a musician in the temple service, envied sinners. In Psalm 73:3 he says, "For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked." These ungodly people seemed to have it all.
Then he went into the sanctuary of God, and understood their end. The Lord casts them down to everlasting destruction. Terrors consume them.
Today we observe people who leave God out of their lives. Many are wealthy. They own houses and lands. They travel in mini-homes or pull a boat behind them on a trailer. We may be tempted to envy them. God tells us not to envy sinners. Pray for them as they travel the broad way that leads to destruction.
The wise woman runs around with wise sailors. She fears the Lord, and honors her husband. She does not shun hard work and avoids the paths of the wicked. She cares for her life-ship and builds it up. If she discovers a leak, she fixes it.
