“ Who can count the raindrops or sand along the seashore ? Who can count the days of eternity? Sirach 1:2
The much awaited rains finally poured down incessantly last night and right through the day, sometimes accompanied by hail.
The sound of the rain beating against the glass pane is always a delight to the ears. The heavenly scent of the damp grass, the cool breeze and washed landscape is heaven’s own refreshing day on earth. The roaring thunder and flash of lightning adds to the sound and light effects.
There is an anecdote about a child who used to always look up and smile whenever the lightning lit up the sky. When asked the reason for this, she said it was because God was taking her photograph. O! for the innocence of a child and faith in God.
For me the sound of the falling rain is akin to God whispers. It also seems as if God is raining down kisses at us from heaven in torrents.
Just as Manna poured down from Heaven on the Israelites in the desert, so also the whispering rains are the fountain of life. It is God’s blessings being showered upon us besides watering the trees, crops and earth.
Water has always been a symbol of Baptism. It is God’s way of cleansing us from Original sin and washing away our iniquities.
We read in Psalms 68:9 “You shed abroad a plentiful rain, O God; You confirmed Your inheritance when it was parched.”
Again in Isaiah 41:18 “ I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water.”
It is the Holy Spirit that flows from within us to quench the thirst of those who await a mere whisper of the Word of God to touch and change their lives.
In the New Testament, Jesus tells us in John 7:38 “Whoever believes in me, streams of life-giving water will pour out from his heart.”
Jesus also tells the Samaritan women at the well.” Whoever drinks the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again, It will give him eternal life.” John 4:14.
We should be still and listen attentively to God whispering into our souls; the life giving message that will lead us home.
