Count your Blessings

When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
Refrain
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
And you will keep singing as the days go by.
Refrain
When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
Count your many blessings. Wealth can never buy
Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.
Refrain
So, amid the conflict whether great or small,
Do not be disheartened, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.
Refrain
Have you ever felt down or depressed? I know I have. I have found that this song helps me a lot. You have to change your mindset instead of wallowing in self-pity, do as the song says; count your blessings, name them one by one. You see by nature people will worry and brood over problems, just cycling them further down into depression. However, by looking on the bright side and counting your blessing you can see that things are not as bad as your mind leads you to believe. I have a friend who is counselor and this is one of the exercises he has his patients do in his office. He says you may be surprised how many people cannot think of anything at first, they are so deep into their problems. Therefore, he starts them out with Jesus dying on the cross for them, then family members (as long as they are not part of the problems), their church and friends. Once you get them going, they usually can continue. He tries to get them to write 100 blessings, if not in his office at least by the next appointment.

Something else he likes to assign is to have them go work in a soup kitchen or some kind of homeless shelter. This way they see that they really have it great compared to someone else. This will really make you see your blessings. My friend says in most cases that by just doing these few simple little things most people do not have to see him any more.

Jesus told us to count our blessing in the beatitudes. He says you are blessed if something befalls you. Just like the song, you are blessed and you do not know it. Look at the start on the blessing that Jesus gives you.

Matt 5
1And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
2And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
3Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
5Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
6Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
7Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
8Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
9Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
10Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
12Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
Next time you fell depressed or down, read Matt 5 and count your blessings.
