I learned a very important lesson about healing during that ordeal with my back. Long before I lost the feeling in my legs, my heart became crippled. I had spent so much time drowning myself in the pity of one cruel remark, broken relationship or failure that rather than turn to God I shut down. It was only after recovering that I began to understand God view on healing.
Our time in our earthly body is limited. God never loses sight of this. The ultimate goal for all of us should be to get rid of our earthly body and spend eternity in the new body will receive in Heaven. As humans suffering from one disorder or another we lose sight of this. Again, God does not.
I believe that there are several reasons that we must endure these illnesses while we are here on earth. In some cases, we must endure the physical trial in order to heal our own souls. In which case, if we are healed here on earth, we should give God all the glory and praise that he so rightly deserves. Our faith becomes stronger knowing that our prayers have been answered. The faith of those who witness our healing and hear our testimony will be stronger as well.
If we are not physically healed we must ask ourselves, has the soul been healed? Have we been drawn closer to God? In which case, God has healed you and will grant you a new body in heaven.
And my final concept comes from my mother’s thirteen year battle with cancer. Mom’s cancer has moved from one location in her body to another. The doctor’s have removed it from place to only find it in another. God has chosen not to remove cancer from mother. And mother was saved before this and remains as close to God as ever. But as an eyewitness to her illness, many have been inspired and brought closer to God. Mother has remained faithfully strong and testified to her walk with God throughout this time. Her family has drawn closer to God and learned so much from seeing her confidence in the fact that she will have a cancer free body when she reaches heaven.
God looks at the big picture. The most important thing to him is getting his children home to him in Heaven. Unless the soul is saved and belongs to God, healing of the earthly body is pointless.
God speaks through suffering.
-Job 36:15
He delivereth the poor in his affliction, and openeth their ears in oppression.
Suffering can be a way of learning.
-Matthew 11:28-30
28. Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
-Philippians 1:29-30
29. For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;
30. Having the same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me.
