GIVE ME THIS MOUNTAIN.”
Caleb, a faithful servant of God, spoke these words when he was eighty years old. Most people who are eighty years old have given up on life and are ready take life easy. No wonder that they get old. Caleb was not that way. He knew that God still had a great purpose for his life and he was determined to continue to see God work. He has always been that way. He was helpful, hopeful, and faithful and when he was eighty years old that did not stop.
When Caleb spoke these words there was a mountain full of people who were enemies to God. God had promised if His people would be brave and drive them out, the mountain would become theirs. So here we have brave and faithful Caleb saying “God has done it before and He can do it again. Let me be part of this. “Give me this mountain.”
We may ask, “how did Caleb become the mighty man that he was?” If I knew, maybe I could become like him. That is how we want you to think. How can I become like Caleb. We don’t have a lot of information as to how it all happened to him so we have to guess. When Caleb is first mentioned in the Bible He was around forty years old. From that we can see that he spent his younger years in Egypt. He experienced God’s working of Miracles to deliver Israel from Egyptian slavery through Moses. He actually saw God at work and became a follower of Moses. It started when he was younger. Today we receive faith a different way. It is usually from the example of our parents who love God. We don’t have to see miracles to know that God is real. We can experience his love and power through the example of our parents. That’s how God does it today. There are parents in this world who are selfish and don’t care about God or others. They are not good examples. If you want to be like Caleb begin by respecting and giving thanks for your Parents who love God. That is where true faith begins. Listen to your parents and ask for their help when you are in trouble, because they want you to be like Caleb. I want to be like Caleb. I am seventy one years old and I still am asking God to continue to do great things in my life. Maybe writing children’s stories is one way.
After the children of Israel left Egypt, God promised that he would give them the whole land that lay before them. God promised that if they would take that first step forward He would go before and defeat the enemies Himself. All they had to do was move forward. That sounds easy. God was saying, “don’t worry, all you have to do is move forward, and I will do the rest. Just trust me.” Caleb believed that God would do as He promised. That’s what faith is. Being faithful means to not just believe with your head it means to show your belief by doing something. Some people have head knowledge about God but it never affects the way that they live so they have faith but they are not faithful. Caleb was faithful.
Now it was time for God to do something very great for his people. He chose twelve leaders from each of the tribes of Israel to go out to examine the great land He was about to give them. His purpose was to encourage their faith and give them confidence. They went out for forty days to search out the land and brought back a report that the land was very beautiful and rich. The bunches of grapes were so large that it took two men to carry them. The report was that God was right, and that the land was great and full of riches. However, ten of these spies were not faithful. When they went into the land they looked for reasons why they should not go forward. They saw Giants of men and huge weapons and it seemed too great. They reasoned “we don’t stand a chance. It’s too hard . We can’t do it.
Sometimes life seems that way and when we think like that we live a life with no meaning and purpose. Two Men had a different report. Joshua and Caleb saw something different from the others. They saw that if they trusted God and went forward it wouldn’t make any differences what the obstacles were. God would remove them. They spoke loudly and tried to get the people to have faith in God and be faithful. The people chose to believe the bad report and those who did died without seeing the promised land.Only the families of Joshua and Caleb were able to enter that land.
Joshua became the leader to replace Moses and Caleb became the mighty man of faith . Their faith in God continued to grow these forty years and by the time Caleb was eighty, his faith was stronger than ever. Someone once said that faith is like muscles the more you exercise the stronger they become. There is no doubt that even in old age Caleb was strong physiclly and mighty in faith because believing God was a regular habit in his life.
Have you been challenged by the faith and character of Caleb, You can be like him too. God Puts these people in the bible and desires that they become our hero’s. As you face the future with all of its challenges why not decide to do it with God first in your life. Maybe some day you will be able to say like Caleb “Give me this mountain”
