OW! HOW IT HURT TO PAY FOR SIN
Ow! How it hurt to pay for sin:
A Son was made an offering,
A spotless, perfect, holy Lamb,
Was slain for man ere time began.
All men like sheep have gone astray
All we have turned each one his way;
The Lord on Him our sins have laid
The Law’s demand He fully paid.
The atonement for sin He sealed
And by His stripes are men all healed;
His chastisement brought us our peace
He died that we all might increase.
Ow! How it hurt to pay for sin:
Jesus, the Lamb, the offering;
About two thousand years ago
At Calvary did suffer so:
Him we denied and Him we sold
For silver coins, not even gold;
A Friend so true we spat upon
A King we stripped and scourged with scorn.
In our court room we did despise,
Accused, condemned, we did chastise -
Our Creator, our Lord, our God;
And mute as sheep, He spoke no word.
Derobed and ragged in scarlet red,
Our crown of thorns sat on His head;
We then reviled, we all did mock,
With whip and reed His pate we struck.
And while He hung upon the tree
He chose to make for us a plea -
God’s forgiveness from thrones above;
Who for the world can show such love?
Rejected, smitten, forsaken,
He shed His blood to save all men;
Upon the cross He bled and died
Ow! Our sharp nails, they crucified.
Sing not just hymns, but bear the yoke
Of love and suff’ring as a cloak;
Christ’s true disciples suffer loss,
They follow Him, each bears a cross.
Ow! How it hurt to pay for sin:
Jesus, the Lamb, the offering,
God’s only Son, the Son of Man,
Was slain for us ere time began.

A hymn most enjoyable when sung and written with the tune of Isaac watts’, When I Survey The Wondrous Cross.
