It was a sad day when man decided to disobey God. Immediately Adam experienced the feelings of guilt and fear, something that he never knew before. Peace and joy that he had while he obeyed God were missing. Adam experienced a separation from God because he disobeyed. God told Adam in the day he took of the tree he would surely die. Adam experienced death of the soul. He lived to be 960 years old and after that experienced death of the body, but now he has become separated from God because of sin.
There is something that we must know about God and why He had to punish Adam. God is always a good God and He always loves man. No matter how bad man becomes, God never stops loving him. God is also holy and pure. Nothing impure can stand in His presence. When man disobeys God he sins. When man sins, it is like bringing an infection in the presence of God. There are two actions that God can take toward sin. He can punish and He can forgive. Later in our story we will see how God did both to Adam.
To continue our story, Adam, Eve and the serpent are standing before God to find out what their punishment will be. It is like a criminal standing before a judge to receive punishment for his crime.
We will start with Eve. God told her because she listened to the serpent she would have great pain when she had children. This punishment did not affect only Eve. Eve’s sin would affect every woman who would live after her. Sometimes when we sin it affects others as well. Women have accepted the pain of childbirth and don’t see it as punishment. Some women have said the birth of the child is worth the pain.
The second word spoken to Eve is that from now on she would come under her husband’s rule. One reason for Eve’s fall was that she acted alone without consulting her husband. Her husband’s ruling over her was more like a protection for her rather than a punishment. Adam was also at fault by not encouraging his wife to stay away from the tree.
To Adam, God had harsh words because He listened to his wife and ate of the fruit. He also failed to protect her from the temptation. God said that from now on, the ground would produce weeds and thistles (probably rocks too) and now he would work hard to put food on the table. He would work by the sweat of his brow until the day that he returned to the earth (die).
A more serious matter happened when Adam sinned. All men after Adam will have this infection called sin. Because of this sin, all men are going to die. God has done something about this which we will talk about shortly.
We will now give attention to what God had to say to the serpent. First God said that he would become the lowest of all God’s creatures. He would crawl on his stomach and eat dirt. That is not a snake, it is a worm. Just think, Satan who was once a high ranking angel is now to become as a worm. What a fall.
The next word that God spoke to Satan was there will be constant warring between the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent. What this means is, those children who love God will be the seed of the woman. Those who hate God will be the seed of the serpent. Throughout life the seed of the serpent will always try to destroy those who love God. God’s word to Satan is that his seed will always be the losers.
In this word, God made a promised to all who choose to follow Him. There will arise in History a man who will be “the seed of the woman.” It tells of a woman who we know as the Virgin Mary who will give birth to a child named Jesus. He will not have a human father and will be without sin. This is important. He lived a life without sin and became the greatest teacher and person in history. Jesus came into this world as a gift from God. For God to forgive sin, a perfect sacrifice was necessary. God allowed His perfect Son to die for my sin so I might have forgiveness. God provided this as a gift but I must receive this gift to have this forgiveness. God told Satan that this seed of the woman will cause his destruction.
To finish this event God did something wonderful. He showed His love once again to Adam by providing them with coats of skins. They tried to cover themselves with fig leaves but God provided a better covering. Do you think Adam and Eve learned their lesson? Do you think that they were sorry for what they did? The coats of skin were a sign of God’s forgiveness. The penalty of their sin remained. But with forgiveness they were able to start again.
Let me close with a personal word. All of us have this sin infection. We see it every time that we act selfishly. The best we can do is to be honest with ourselves and with God. God has already punished your sin in allowing His son Jesus to die for you. How can I be forgiven? How can I know I am?
Before we talk about that I would like to share with you how I came to be forgiven. One day I was reading in the Bible and came across this verse that God used to help me. It said:
“Behold I stand outside the door of your inner life and knock. Can you hear me? I am the loving God and I want to enter your life. I choose not to force the door open. Only you can open it from the inside. If you will open the door and let me in, I will be your friend and savior forever.”
That day I opened my heart to Jesus and experienced forgiveness and a new life forever.
As we complete this chapter, I would like to invite you to receive Jesus into your life.
If you will sincerely pray this prayer to God He will forgive your sins (all of them) and allow you to start over with a clean heart.
Dear Jesus, thank you for dying for my sin. Please forgive me and make my heart clean. I invite you to enter my life to be my Saviour and friend. Help me to love your word and be faithful to you. In Jesus name I pray.
