JESUS NEVER LEAVES YOU
There are times in our lives when we are alone or we feel lonely, but there’s also the times when we’ve got friends who are there through thick and thin no matter what. I’ve been fortunate to have some friends like that. Friends who won’t leave you in the middle of your troubles and even those who won’t leave you when you’re not treating them the way you should. In fact, I almost entitled this – “Did you ever have a friend who wouldn’t leave you?” I’m glad that I’ve had friends who didn’t leave despite my actions. I don’t know what I would have done without them.
First, there’s Lena. She is the only person I really stay in contact with from high school. It’s strange since we were friends in high school and then after she got married, I was friends with her husband Bill more than her. Maybe not more than her, but I just didn’t spend time with her – she was a mom with three kids. Later, they moved and I lost contact with them but she showed up later and made a difference in my life that no one else can claim.
Lena inspired me to write. She is a writer herself. I was out of a job and just kind of all pent up with emotion and nervous energy and no outlet for it. She encouraged me to write and then said I was good. I think she was stretching the truth a bit, but the outlet was so relieving, invigorating and gave me a new lease on life. I honestly don’t know if I’ll ever do anything more with it than just a past-time, but that’s enough. I keep wondering if I’m any good and then I remember, writing is an art-form. There is no good or bad. It’s you – expressed. I hadn’t done much to stay in touch with Lena, yet she really never left me.
Another person I’ll not forget is Deborah. She and I were close friends along with some guys (I do and did have guy friends too), but me and the guys started partying and she wanted to remain pure to her beliefs and wouldn’t participate. Yet, she didn’t drop me as a friend. She encouraged me to leave that lifestyle even though I denied some of it and she knew I was lying. When I went from bad to worse she’d call at just the right time and pray with me over the phone. I was having panic attacks from living a life of drugs and alcohol and no sleep yet she never left me.
Scott is a guy who was supposed to fly that next morning, after a disturbing call from me, to his brother’s wedding several states away. He never made it. I had taken a bunch of pills in a cry for help and called him. I didn’t come right out and tell him that, but he wouldn’t let me off the phone and he probed until I told him. So in the middle of the night, he got up and was instrumental in saving my life. I hadn’t treated him like a friend should treat a friend, yet he’s never left me.
In Dallas I don’t know very many people, but I’ve made some good friends. One of them is Grant. I haven’t been a lot of fun many times, but we have a lot in common and we’ve pulled each other through some very tough times. He’s a real friend. I have a lot of mood swings and I’ve been a pain, yet he’s never left me. There are some guys at the church and Celebrate Recovery group I go to and I’m not a dependable person as far as attendance goes or staying in touch with them, but they are always checking up on me. They’ve never left me either.
Probably the one who’s been through the worst with me as a friend anyway would be Bill because I stayed with him while I was in a partial hospital program for serious depression a couple of times. I can seriously and honestly say I don’t think I offered much of anything as a friend during that time. I apologized many times for being a bump on a log, but he assured me that I’m not and that’s what brothers in Christ are for so he’s never left me.
Melanie, an ex-girlfriend who I stay in contact with went through a rough time with me has really gone through it with me. At times she hurt like I did, lost sleep over me and probably was depressed about me. There were plenty of opportunities for her to wash her hands and say disappeared, which would have been easy since she lived three hours away and hour much further but she didn’t. She’s never left me.
All of those people are friends that I’ll hold close to my heart forever. There are many more. But, there’s One who sticks closer than a brother. His Name is Jesus. He’s been with me all along. I’ve treated Him the worst. We all have. We’re actually never alone. He’s always with us. In Him we don’t have to be lonely or alone. That doesn’t mean we don’t need friends too, but when our friends aren’t there, He is. What’s great about His friendship is that some of my friends may leave me. But Jesus, He’ll never leave me. Nor will He leave you.
