When we give our lives to Jesus, we must count the cost for serving Him. Counting that cost will bring us to Calvary tree, to see what we are made of, and how, through prayer and His Word, we can turn our weaknesses around and know what it takes to count the cost.
Counting the cost is a painful thing to do if we are serious about serving God. It will cost us everything to truly surrender ourselves to Him. We need to take stock for the cost that we are counting. We must come to God and ask Him what is it in our lives that we must surrender to Him. God will take us through the journey of discovering ourselves, and if we are serious about following Him, we must be willing to give up everything and be made right before Him. He will show us our weaknesses, our struggles, pains, and the things that hold us, that we have difficulty giving up on.
Until we come to the point where we said we are willing and ready to surrender, God cannot work in our lives. It will cost us everything if we are willing to be molded and shaped by Him. The process may be painful, but it is absolutely necessary to go through the fire if we are to stand the test. God will put us into the fiery fire, but He promise that He will not give us what we cannot take, for He says in 1 Cor 10:13 that no temptation has overtaken us except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that we may be able to bear it. (NKJV)
We must discover what God is saying to us regarding our weaknesses and strongholds and do something about it. God will show us but it takes us to be willing to go through the fire and overcome it. In Rev 2&3 Jesus says that we will be “overcomers” if…we obey God’s command…as was said to the seven churches that John wrote in Revelation. Until we are willing to be overcomers, we will never be able to rid of our strongholds. What then are our strongholds?
Strongholds are habits and our ways of thinking, mannerism, behavior, and anything that is contrary to the Word of God. It can be alcoholism, drugs, or it can be rage, anger, wrath, violence, lies and deceit, jealousy, and anything that are not the character of Christ. If we truly want to serve God, we must be willing to get rid of everything that cost us from living like Christ. We must count the cost like in Lk 14:28-32 that whether we build a tower, or go to war, we must calculate that we have enough to finish building it, or whether we will send a delegation of peace to our enemy if we do not have the manpower to handle the enemy; lest when we build or rule, and are unable to finish it or handle the conflict, people will laugh at us. This is the complete analogy of completing the race that is set before us.
Unless and until we become like Christ, people will not see Jesus in us and will not believe us. It is therefore vitally important that we stand right before men, so that we can be witnesses for Christ and bring many into His kingdom. How we behave do affect our relationship with men, we therefore need a Christ-like character so that we will be like Him and make His name known.
If we are poor in handling relationship, pray and ask God to help us in our character. We need skills in handling relationship and we need to be humble and teachable in order to make right our ways.
Morally we must be right because we are admonished to stay pure and righteous. One day we will have to stand in the judgment of Christ, and we are responsible and accountable to ourselves, the way we are and the way we respond to His correction, teaching, reprove, and training in righteousness. 2 Tim 3:16. Let the Word of God be our guide so that we can become more like Christ.
We may have weaknesses such as fear, intimidation, weak character, lack of will power, inferiority complex, shyness, or anything that will keep us from rising up to our fullest potential. In the course of our lives, as we are hurting by rejection, persecution, or any other areas that threatened our relationship with God and men, then we must make ourselves right before God in order to overcome our problems. We must discover our own weaknesses in our characters and realise the pattern of our behavior, how we respond and react to situations, and how we deal with them. It can be anger and rage, or it could be fear or rebelliousness, whatever it is, we need the blood of Jesus to cover us, and we need to deal with it, either through our leaders who can pray for us, or pray through with the Word of God as our healing balm of Gilead.
God’s Word is able to heal us for it is medicine to our soul and health to our bones. It we take time to uncover God’s Word, we will be like jewels, full of riches and knowledge in Him. With it we can conquer over every situation and be made perfect in Christ. This should be our highest goal, to be like Christ and serve Him and love Him with all our hearts, mind, will, strength and might.
May we grow in the strength of the Lord and the power of His might.
