A person you can live a good morale life but it will not get you into heaven. The indiactment against us is that we are of the race of Adam and because he sinned he and all man kind is spiritually dead or if you will seperated from the life of GOD. We have lost the ability to recieve revelation of GOD from GOD. As such we are all destined for hell.
God has provided a way to heaven for all man kind through Jesus Christ. In fact the word says in 2Co 5:19 - "To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation." As far as GOD is concerned he has already saved the whole world. For any one to benifit from what GOD has done two things have got to happen. 1. they have to hear about it and 2. they have to act on it.
After a person recieves what GOD has already done for all man kind by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ you recieve the gift of righteousness.
Ro 5:17 - 18
For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
Now the word righteousness just means to be in right standing with GOD.
It is a gift It does not matter if you live 1000 years you will never be able to pay GOD or Jesus back for what they have done for you. Now as far as the right living and doing the word calls that the fruits of righteousness. That comes from a reborn human spirit and it takes time and christian maturity.
2Co 9:10
Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness
Php 1:11
Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.

Eternal life cannot be gained good works, as Christ showed us through the thief on the Cross. this guy had no time to do good as he was nailed there dying, all he did was accept and acknowledg Jesus Christ is God and King of a kingdom eternal. Romans 6:23 saysd "For the wages of sin is death, BUT THE GIFT of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus." A gift can never be paid for, can nver be earned, can never be added to, we just receive it. God's Holy Spirit starts His works in us
"for it is God Who works in you to will and to do according to His good purpose."(Philippians 2:13)
