Psalm 119:105
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.
The visual image of light is so powerful. It is used numerous times in scripture. Usually when I think of light, I think of turning on a switch and having a dark room fill with light, but this scripture reference brings a different image to my mind.
When I think of a light for my path, I see a narrow beam, illuminating just enough in front of me for me to take the next few steps. When I'm walking with a flashlight, I walk tentatively. I'm not sure what is way up ahead, I only know the next five steps are safe.
I think God's word is like that sometimes. We may be walking through life, fairly certain of our path and bam! Out go the lights. Those are the times we have to trust God to show us the next steps. He'll show us what we need to know, the next five steps.
Often I wish that God would just turn on the overhead light and show us the big picture. I'd love to know where this path is leading, but God often has different plans. I need to have faith that each step he lights for me will lead in the right direction.
As difficult as it is to trust him at times, I need to remember that he knows the destination, I don't. Maybe he's leading me up a mountain and I would turn around if I could see how much farther there is to go. But blindly I follow, step by step, until I reach the top and can enjoy the view.
Heavenly Father,
Sometimes I feel so uncertain about my path. I can see only a foot or two in front of me. I can't tell where I am going. God, all I want is for you to show me the whole picture, but wisely, you guide me, one step at a time. Thank you for your wisdom. Grant me patience to keep going, one step at a time.
Amen.
