The next morning Charles arrived at Angie's apartment at exactly six o'clock with a huge picnic basket. The basket had peanut butter sandwiches, BLTs, cold cuts, chips, and salad in it. (Charles had gotten up two hours earlier to prepare everything.) They got into his car and drove off. To avoid being caught by the police and risk getting Charles thrown into jail for being with a white woman, Angie would duck whenever a police car drove by.
Once they were by the lake sitting on the picnic blanket and eating their meal, Charles asked Angie what she did for a living.
"I teach second grade at Selma Elementary. You?"
"I'm an assistant manager. I work at The Pizza Palace," Charles answered.
"Good for you." Angie playfully punched him in the arm. "So, how do you like it?"
Charles shrugged. "I enjoy it. I mean, I love pizza and working with people, but irate customers who complain when you mess up are a pain."
Angie nodded. "I know what you mean. I find it rewarding to educate young minds, but there are some kids who are major handfuls. But God blessed me with the gift of teaching and the desire to teach, so I love it."
Charles felt the overwhelming urge to hold Angie passionately in his arms, but he knew it wouldn't be right to just do it all of a sudden without her permission. "Angie, may I hold you?" he asked.
Angie felt her heart race, and she became flushed in the face. Of course she wanted Charles to hold her. She felt totally safe and happy when she was with him. "Yes," she said softly.
Charles put his arms around Angie and squeezed tightly. "Angie, you're an incredible woman," he said. "I've never met anyone like you. I want to know more about you."
The two spent the rest of their picnic getting to know each other's characters more deeply. They discovered that they had both received Christ at an early age and had remained faithful to their commitment to keep their virginity until they were married--and they were thirty years old now! They both loved studying the Bible and having fellowship with other Christians, and they agreed to meet for more picnics after this, only at all the picnics after this one, they would bring their Bibles and study the Scriptures and pray together.
