All things are full of weariness; a man cannot utter it; the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. What has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. – Ecclesiastes. 1:8-9
Just as there is nothing new under the sun, there is nothing new in “news” even though they call it news. Everything they report on is as old as why Cain killed Abel. Tiger Woods cheating on his wife; it’s the same old story with a different face. Next week it will be somebody else. Adultery, crimes of passion and greed – what is new about them? To listen to the “news”, is to drink from the cup of weariness. It is to watch the antics of people running and spinning in the same boring wheel like insane hamsters.
But the key to escape is contained in the verses quoted above. While there is nothing new under the sun there is always something new over the sun as He who created the sun is over all things.
It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. – Lam. 3: 22-23
Nothing under the sun ever has or ever will satisfy the heart.
Our hearts are restless until they find rest in thee. – St. Augustine
Neither careers, relationships, affairs, material goods or any created thing will fill that Grand Canyon within. They aren’t supposed to. But when human beings try to fill that canyon with these things (which is what the “news” is all about) they put themselves on an insect level.
The bot fly lays its eggs in the open wound of an animal. As soon as the eggs hatch the maggots immediately begin to eat the damaged flesh, expanding the wound and killing the host. Unless a man or woman sees through a career, relationship or material goods to the God who gave them as gifts for a higher purpose they are trapped “under the sun”, condemned to search for the next thing they think will ease their restless hearts while they only expand the wound. The earth is full of human bot flies.
The cure for the weariness of the “news” is the old and always has been.
Thus says the LORD, Stand in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein. – Jer. 6:16
He said unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so. – Matt. 19:8
God lays things out a certain way from the beginning. We stray from it en masse and then come to believe we’re in the right way because we’ve done it that way for so long. Our way then becomes an old way but it’s not part of the old path any more than the wanderings of the children of Israel through the desert was part of the old path.
There is an incredible weariness in this world played out by those who don’t understand that to be in this world doesn’t mean to be of it (Jn. 18:36) and that everything under the sun is refreshed only by what is over it.
This same weariness is in much that comes out of modern Christianity as well. But the old paths are still there and no one group has a claim on them. They belong to those who ask for them, and none ask for them apart from the Holy Spirit any more than they can say Jesus is Lord without that same Spirit (1 Cor. 12:13).
The old paths are always resurrected as new paths just as the Lord’s mercies are new every morning. But just as the Lord’s mercies are new every morning they proceed from His faithfulness which is always old and new.
There is nothing new under the sun because the old paths are all that is really available. Not to understand that is to weary one with searching for what cannot be. But to understand it is to have a secret place (Psalm 91:1) that will never make the “news”.
