And the famine was over all the face of the earth: and Joseph opened all the
storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians; and the famine waxed sore in the land
of Egypt. And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph for to buy [corn;] because
that the famine was so sore in all lands. Genesis 41:56-57;

The current economic crisis experienced world over is similar to the situation the ancient world find itself in the days of Jacob. All the nations of the then world had been hit by severe famine or economic recession as we would call it today. The situation was so critical that the whole world was almost on the path to extinction but for the respite that came from the land of Egypt. Egypt became the only beacon of hope for the whole world at the time of severe famine because of one man’s wisdom! Joseph’s wisdom and counsel provided the only saving grace, not just for Egypt, but for the whole world during the critical moment. How great is the power of divine wisdom!

In this day of global meltdown, everyone’s concern is how to find solutions to the severe economic crises which continue to ravage the whole world. In search of solutions and respite, individuals and nations have experimented a number of ideas and economic programs which have failed to yield the desired results. It appears the ‘wisdom of Joseph’ is required to tackle the economic crises. Only those who operate in the divine wisdom of God can hope to stay afloat in the present situation the world is finding itself. God has answers to all human problems no matter how terrible the situation is.

Firstly, the surest way to survive the tough times is to make the Almighty God your ally. Throughout history, those who were known to be in close relationship and covenant with God had always stood out in the midst of challenges and hard times; they have never been stranded or knocked down during critical moments. For instance, during the severe famine that ravaged the land of Gerar as recorded in the book of Genesis Chapter 26, Isaac, against all odds continued to flourish and grew so mighty that he became the envy of the country where he dwelt! What was his secret? He was in covenant with the Almighty God, so all his steps and decisions were divinely guided.

So many people fail woefully in life because they attempt to work things out on their own without involving God. The truth is, without God, your brilliant ideas and efforts will continue to hit the rocks! The wisdom of Joseph was able to provide the much needed solution to the world’s problem all because it was inspired of God. In the times of famine and harsh economic conditions, divine inspiration from above will continue to be a major means of sustenance for those who walk with God no matter how terrible the situation may be.

Another secret that will sustain you during the hard times is to keep on sowing no matter how meager your resources may be. One of the ways people normally respond in the times of economic depression is to cut down on expenditures and spending. It will be foolish of us however to think that this also applies to giving to God and supporting others who are in genuine need of our assistance. So many people have stopped paying tithes and offerings in church let alone supporting people in dire needs because they want to save as much as possible to make ends meet; this is foolishness of the highest order! The surest way you can keep the storehouse of heaven open upon your life is to cease not giving to God and supporting the needy.

And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday:
And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not. Isaiah 58:10-11;

Finally, wisdom requires that you remain sensitive at all times to recognize the opportunities around you. The fact that global financial crisis is biting hard at the moment does not mean opportunities are no longer out there. Everyday comes with opportunities, but only those who recognize and seize them will hit their breakthroughs. One established fact is that opportunities hardly come to the lazy; the harder you work the more you create and multiply opportunities! This is not the time to lose hope or worry about the future, trust your life into the unfailing arms of the Almighty and face tomorrow with excitement.
