A steward wearing a dark cutaway jacket sat down in the last open chair and smiled at everyone around the table. " Good evening, my name is Hughes and I will be your host this evening". He handed out menus as he introduced everyone. " Tonight, we have oysters on the half shell, salmon mousseline, lamb chops and mint jelly".
As he filled their water goblets, David wondered how he could talk to Charlene who was sitting at the other end of the table with her brother. It was so noisy in the room, he could not hear anybody talking at the other end of the long table.
As they ate and enjoyed their meal, he had an interesting conversation with Benjamin Guggenheim and his mother enjoyed talking to Kitty Webb.
As people finished their dinner and left the table, David finally found his chance. " Mother, I'll be right back".
She smiled as she talked to a steward.
