“An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules” (2 Tim. 2:5) RSV.
Every game has rules governing it. The success of a player depends on his ability to keep faithful to the rules of the game. A penalty is taken against a footballer who handles the ball in his own 18-yard box. He has gone against a rule of the game. The opponent has the chance to win the game by scoring the penalty kick. The Christian race is likened to an athletic competition. Our ability to receive the victor’s crown depends on how we are able to run without offending the rules. Along the way, we can fall but we still have the opportunity to get up and continue the race. It is not about who gets there first but it is about whether you will get there. We are all athletes running in a race, fighting with our opponent (the devil) and not with our fellow believers. Let’s remain steadfast, resolute on achieving the victor’s crown. The bottom line is that, there are rules of the game (Christian life) and we must obey them so that we will gain the victor’s crown. The rules are all contained in HIS Word. Read it, study it, meditate on it and then practice it. In so doing, we shall be crowned when Christ comes in His glory.
Prayer
Help me Lord to stick to the principles of Christ.
