BEING HUMBLE
BY DR GEE
Humility--whether it is a sign of weakness. Not at all.People may think of humble person as unimportant having no back bone.We might have heard the saying"Simple and humble is the temple of God".Yes,humilty is a sign of real greatness.
The literal meaning of the word 'humility' in the Greek means"to stoop low".It is having the idea of serving another person.Let us see the life of Jesus. He is born as the poorest of poor so that no poor should be devoid of being served by him.He never boasted and acted in a selfish way.He humbled himself in living to serve his fellow man.
In the Bible,we hear from Jesus' own lips, what he is like in heart in Matthew 11:28-29,"Come to me,all you labour and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.Take my yoke and learn of me;for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
The heart of Jesus is of gentleness and humilty.Jesus radiated his love not only to friends but even to enemies. This is possible because of his gentle and humble heart embracing the whole humanity for its well-being.Though Jesus had every right to be proud,he remained humble for the much needed harmony among human beings.
Through meekness only one can really experience the essence of this earthly life.True leaders are those who inspire others by their life.Such leaders exemplify service to others with humility.
When there is a dispute among the disciples of Jesus, who is going to be the greatest,Jesus himself is washing the feet of disciples, revealing that to be great one should be humble in serving others. In Mark 10:43-45,Jesus says,"Yet it shall not be so among you;but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. And whoever of you desires to be first, shall be slave of all.For the son of man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many".
The mission of Jesus Christ is of humble service: not to reform but to transform oneself as a whole. He loves and respects everyone as God's creation irrespective of religion, caste, colour, creed, status, position etc.He is teaching us through his life that to what level one can become humble to that level one becomes really great. It will prevent unhealthy competition among people leading to uncivilised and criminal activities.
Being humble alone brings lasting effects of a meaningful life."I am nothing in myself but something in the Almighty":That is real humility!
