I would not care to be a man of letters,
For this there lies no deep desire within;
But I would dare (by God's dear grace) to
loose the fetters,
That bind a helpless world in chains of sin
I would not feign to be a speaker fervent,
Or move great multitudes with just a wave
or nod;
But I would deign be God's most humble
servant,
And move one lonely, wand'ring sinner
back to God.
I would not seek for worldly exaltation,
What would it profit though the world
I gain;
But I would speak the Gospel of salvation
And die a pauper on some long-forgotten
plain.
I would not strive for riches, fame or
glory,
Nor walk on heights that never man has
trod;
But I would preach the simple gospel
story
And be a bondslave for the Son of God!
