THOUGHT FOR TODAY: “A noose is hidden for him on the ground; a trap lies in his path.” Job 18:10, NIV
Did you ever wonder how to catch a monkey? Man uses the monkey’s passion for the bait against him. He places a handful of nuts into a bottle with a long narrow neck and leaves the bottle unattended in the jungle. Smelling the food in the bottle, the monkey sticks his hand down the narrow neck and grabs the food. His closed fist is too large to move back up the neck of the bottle, so he has a choice – let go of the food or be trapped.
Satan has laid out monkey traps for all of us and uses our own shortcomings to outsmart us. We have our pick of bait – money, power, pride, relationships, sex, to name just a few. For me, whatever the bait, the results are the same – I’m a monkey sitting in the jungle with my hand stuck in a jar.
Like the monkey, I have a choice. I can either hang onto that bait and wait for Satan or I can let go and be free of the trap. Letting go isn’t easy, but once I stop struggling I always see Jesus with his hand extended, waiting to help me up.
PRAYER: Lord, I am so grateful that you never give up on me. Thank you for always being there when I stumble, ready to pick me up, dust me off and set me on the right path. Help me always to see the lesson in those monkey traps. Amen.
