Iggy’s First Big Parade
“Oh, stop! Please, stop! That tickles…” Iggy laughed and yelled as Sarah tried to ride him.
“Oh, you are tickling my sides. Oh! Please, stop.”
Sarah kept trying to sit on Iggy’s back to ride him, but Iggy kept jumping up and down.
Finally, after several tries, Sarah sat on Iggy’s back—but not for long.
Iggy shook his really big floppy ears and yelled, “Oh, I can’t take it. That really tickles”. He jumped up in the air, and Sarah went flying into the barn.
All the other young donkeys that were watching Iggy started running around in the field and saying, “He isn’t a real donkey. No one can ride Iggy. He must be a PIG.”
Then, they started singing, “Iggy is a Piggy. Iggy, the Piggy. ”
What Iggy did not know was that he was about to be given a very special surprise. Iggy’s mom yelled to him in the field, “Iggy, you have been chosen to carry the king in the big parade tomorrow.” Iggy jumped in the air and rolled around on the ground, wagging his tail and yelling, “HEE HAW”.
But all of the sudden he realized this would mean the king would have to sit on his back. He began to feel dizzy. His big, floppy ears started hitting his face. Then he fell to the ground. Iggy’s mom quickly awakened him. “Iggy, are you okay?” she asked.
“Are you sure that I have been chosen to carry the king?” said Iggy.
“Yes, you are the one. There were two men that came to the field and picked you out of all the donkeys,” replied his mother.
Iggy almost began to cry. He said to his mom, “You know what happens to me when someone tries to ride me. It tickles”.
Iggy’s mom laughed, “Iggy, I know you made several people fly into the barn, but that does not mean that will happen with the king.”
“I can’t do it. Mom, it tickles too much.”
“Do you want to be remembered as Piggy-like what all of the other donkeys call you?” His mother walked home and left him in the field.
Iggy remembered all those people who had tried to ride him. “Did the king know that I am really ticklish?” he thought to himself.
Iggy’s friend Ira found him lying on the ground. She was giggling and laughing. “Iggy, I hear you are going to carry a king tomorrow. What do you think will happen? Sure, you won’t throw him in the air like everyone else. They don’t call you Piggy for nothing.”
Iggy jumped up off the ground and said, “I don’t know what will happen, but I am not going to be at that parade tomorrow.”
“What are you going to do?” Ira asked.
“I am going to run as far away from that parade as I can,” said Iggy.
“Don’t do that,” replied Ira.
Iggy ran as fast as he could. Ira ran after him yelling, “I didn’t mean what I said, Iggy. Don’t run away!”
But Iggy ran faster than she did. He ran so fast that she could never catch up to him. He ran far away into a strange forest. His parents had always told him not to go into the woods, but he did anyway.
He didn’t know what to do or where to go, so he just ran further and further into the woods while it got darker and darker. He heard strange noises and he became very afraid.
He ran over hills, around rivers, and through muddy swamps. Iggy knew he shouldn’t have run away from home, but he was sure that he would do everything he could to not be in the parade.
After running all day, Iggy found a huge green field with tall grass and wildflowers. If he hid down in the tall grass, no one would find him. He laid down in the grass, and he was so tired that he went right to sleep. He slept there all night, all by himself.
The next morning, two men found Iggy in the field. “There he is,” they said. “Right where he is supposed to be.” Iggy had ended up sleeping where the parade would start.
Iggy heard someone say, “This is the baby donkey you wanted to ride. His name is Iggy. Here, use my coat for something to sit on.”
Iggy felt the warm purple coat fall on his back, so he knew it was the king. Iggy was scared because he was going to be ticklish, and he was sad because he was all dirty. His fur was covered in mud from the swamp, and his really big floppy ears were all scraped up from the woods. No way was he good enough for a king to ride.
All of the sudden, Iggy heard a large crowd yelling, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord.”
Iggy bowed down to Jesus, and as Jesus began to ride Iggy, something special happened. Iggy didn’t feel anything. He wasn’t being tickled. Jesus petted Iggy’s head. Then Iggy began to pick up his muddy feet and walk with his head high in the air. His big floppy ears began waving back and forth.
Many of the young donkeys, including Ira, saw him in the parade. Ira yelled. “Iggy, you did it.” Iggy was no longer ticklish. He was no longer called a pig. He was just Iggy.
Then, he saw his mom in the crowd. She yelled, “That’s my son. I am proud of you, Iggy.”
As Iggy walked through this large group of people, he saw them throw palm branches at his feet. He knew this king Jesus was really special.
Iggy was so happy and so excited that he yelled, “Oh yeah, I’ve got the King. I‘ve got the walk. I am Iggy.”
