I told you a few weeks ago that I would tell you the dream that really changed my life. It happened when I was in college, the last semester of my senior year. I only had to take three classes, all sophomore level humanities courses, in other words, very easy -- so I had a lot of time on my hands. With that extra time, I started reading many books, almost a book a day. I read a different stuff, but a lot of science fiction/fantasy stuff. I read Kurt Vonnegut, the Star Wars series and the spin offs; in the same area of the bookstore was the Amityville Horror series. I had seen the movie several years before, but the book cover said that the movie only told half the story; there were more scary details in the book. Therefore, curiosity got the best of me and I bought it and started to read. The book does go into a lot more details and is more open about the satanic influence and demons. I was quite fascinated with this and there were two more books on how the demons had followed the family for 7 years. Of course, I got the other books, read them also, and was more curious about demonic influence than I should have been.
After reading the books one night, I had a dream. I was in a place that was all white and there was like fog or a mist only up to my waist. Some creature was chasing me, it was not the traditional Devil, but I could feel the evil and oppression coming from behind me. I remember just running and running. I had been on the cross country team in college and had ran a marathon, so I was used to running long distances but he was chasing me forever and always just on my heels like he was taunting me. He wanted me for his own, I knew but I never remember him saying that. All of a sudden, I stopped and turned around and yelled at him “He who is in me is greater than he who is in the world.” I yelled this twice and on the third time, I woke up. The next morning my roommate asked me about all the screaming. I told him that I had a nightmare. He said I was yelling so much that I woke him up. He said I was yelling something about the world. He also told me to stop read those books about Amityville. That was good advice.
I know the dream was real because of what my roommate had said. I had gone to church growing up and had memorized many scriptures for different contests and stuff that I normally won. I must have memorized that verse.
1 John 4:4
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
Because of this dream I searched out a Bible study group and got different reading material, I bought a Bible and started reading it. The leader of the Bible study group was from Indiana, not far from where I grew up. We hit it off great. He helped me get my life back on track. With Bible study and prayer, we set up a plan for me that when I graduated I would join a church back home and would start working with the children’s groups. This finally led me to go to Seminary.
I want to encourage you to realize that fascination about the devil and his powers can be a very dangerous thing. I encourage you not to watch the scary movies and read the scary books. I ask you not to participate in Halloween. Learn from my experience that this is not something to mess with. God of course used this to turn my life around, but I do not recommend this for anybody.
