A true Story of what happened and what could take place if the health care reform bill becomes law.
This is a true story of what happened to me as my Mother lay gravely ill in the last months of her life. On Sept. 5, 2008 my Mother went into respiratory failure. She had, had a stroke a few months prior which damaged the nerves that controlled breathing, thus leaving her in respiratory failure. The previous night I made sure she was taken to the hospital. The paramedics place a full oxygen mask on her face, it seemed to really help her breath more easily. I was so distraught at the thought she might not make it through the night. I asked the nurse in her room if Mom could have a full face oxygen mask and she refused to do it telling me, we don't do that here, that is only for the ambulance drivers. I was so worried. The next morning, as I awaited for her doctor to arrive, to everyone's amazement, Mom suddenly awoke from the coma she had been in and began speaking to me and my sister and the nurses, every breath was a struggle, but she acted as though nothing had happened to her, freely speaking to all of us. Suddenly her doctor arrived, he saw her speaking and recognized she was in respiratory failure. He immediately made arrangements to have her transferred to the ICU and placed on life support. He said, "I was not told she was in respiratory failure", "how can she be speaking while in respiratory failure? That is impossible". Mom was questioned by the Doctor and others of her wishes which I as power of attorney had already expressed, that she be place on life support, my sister argued and did not want her placed on life support, but Mom was able to speak for herself and agree with me that this was in fact her desire, Thank God for his miracles. God had not only made her live in spite of the nurses refusal to place a full oxygen mask on her, but now she actually communicated clearly , that she desired to live, even if it meant on life support. In a short while she was transferred to the ICU and placed on a ventilator. Before they intubate, they sedate the individual, since it is a real ordeal to go through. After she was placed on life support it was a long while before she could talk again. I felt so alone, I knew I could not communicate with her now. Mom lived six more months on life support before she went to be with Jesus. But on November 1, 2008, Mom went into septic shock and her organs began failing. Her liver, kidneys and stomach were failing. The infection it seemed had overtaken her body, Antibiotics were given to her, and I stayed at her bed and prayed all night that she would live. In the morning the Doctor came in and said," Your Mom's organs are working again, though she is not out of the woods yet. God had brought her through what was the lowest valley of her life! God had done another miracle for her. In the last months of her life God did one miracle after another, to the point that her secular Doctor deemed, "Your Mother has had a chain of miracles" Her quiet, unassuming manner had brought more glory to God in the last months of her life than probably in any other time of her life. For when we are weak then we are strong, proclaims the bible. At one time while all this was happening, a medical ethicist came to visit me and tried to force her and some other folks opinion on me that she she be disconnected from life support and allowed to die. When asked why I would not allow this, I simply stated that I was following both her and my wishes and since I was the power of attorney, she was going to remain on life support. She was barred from returning to that hospital because I would not allow them to disconnect her life support.
Why am I telling you this? I feel it is necessary for us as free Americans to protect our precious God given freedoms to allow our loved ones to live until God takes them home. This is a decision each person must make for themselves, without the forced opinions of medical or anyone else. If this proposed health care reform bill passes do you want a panel of individuals to tell you their opinion of what you and your loved one should do if your loved one is in the position my Mother and I were in? Do you want people who are unrelated to you and have no personal connections to help you make such a decision/ I for one do not want anyone making my decision for me! I can do it myself. I think it is a very sad situation when people try to play God just to save money. This could put many people at risk who are elderly or disabled if the government decides whose life is worth saving and whose is not. In heaven someday when all is said and done. Many that were supposed big shots here on earth, will be small shots there, and those that seemed obscure and to be no bodies will suddenly be the big shots there. One never knows how many lives someone has touched for the cause of Christ. Personally I can see how many lives were touched by what the Doctors, nurses and so many others witnessed when God did miracles for Mom. Perhaps some of those that witnessed what God did for her will one day turn to Christ as a result of seeing what God did for one quiet, unassuming lady whom I loved dearly and miss greatly. This article is dedicated to my precious Mother. November 20, 1920- March 14, 2008
