The crucifixion of our Redeemer and his conquest over death are the very source of our spiritual life and hopes. Remove this foundation, and the whole fabric falls, all our hopes for eternity sink at once. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith. It is by holding on to this truth firmly, that Christians are made to stand in a day of trial, and kept faithful to God.
The saving truths of the gospel must be fixed in our mind, revolved much in our thoughts, maintained and held fast to the end, if we would be saved.
Christians must:
(1.) Fix God's laws and commandments as their rule, by which they will in every thing be ruled, and to which they will yield obedience. They will not save us, if we do not attend to them, and yield to their power, and continue to do so to the end. Our wills and affections must be subject to them and must in every thing conform to them. Not only in our heads, but our hearts. They are to be received and retained.
(2.) Acquaint themselves with them.
(3.) Own and depend upon it in all of their affairs, both by faith and prayer.
(4.) Remember them so that they may be ready to use them. We are assured that it is the certain way to long life and prosperity.
Those that put themselves under divine guidance will always have the benefit of it. God will give them wisdom, which is profitable to direct, so that they shall not turn aside into the by-paths of sin. Those that faithfully follow the pillar of cloud and fire will find that it leads them the right way.
