“Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves.” — II Corinthians 13:5
The Trial of Our Light
Divine light and knowledge are the beauty and improvement of the mind. It becomes the disciples of the Mediator to be persons of wisdom and understanding. It is by keeping God’s commandments that His love is made perfect in us. Obedience is the result and proof of love, and also gives love the opportunity to flow over the whole life. A careful conscientious of obedience to God’s commands shows that the apprehension and knowledge of these things are graciously impressed upon the soul. Therefore it must follow in the reverse that: “He who says I know him, and keeps not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.”
In the visible church there are often those who assume to themselves to be more than what is actually true. They say they are in the light, and that the divine revelation has made its impression upon their minds and spirits, and yet they walk in hatred and enmity towards their Christian brethren. These cannot be swayed by the sense of the love of Christ to their brethren, and therefore remain in their dark state. Professors of the truth are often ashamed of their ignorance, or ashamed to own it; they frequently pretend to be great attainments in the knowledge of divine mysteries.
A disobedient life is the confutation and shame of pretended religious knowledge. It gives the lie to such boasts and pretences, and shows that there is neither religion nor honesty in them. If one claims to have a saving knowledge of Christ, yet lives in disobedience, his life puts the lie to his words.
In the darkness of this world of sin - in all the sorrows that now come upon the race, and will come upon the wicked hereafter - we have the assurance that a God of infinite benevolence rules over all.
Let us hold on to the truth that he is love. Let us believe that he sincerely desires our good, and that what seems dark to us may be designed for our welfare; and amidst all the sorrows and disappointments of the present life, let us feel that our interests and our destiny are in the hands of the God of love.
