Human freedom results when people do what they are meant to do. Starting with Adam, God created mankind with purposes of love and obedience. Unfortunately, because of humanity’s decisions to sin instead, death and destruction has tyrannized the human race. The God of love, though, has given mankind a second chance called grace. It can save lives if we just do what we are supposed to do.
“People reap what they sow” (Galatians 6:7). When God created us, (because He knew that “love does no wrong to anyone”) He commanded us to plant seeds of love to one and another (Romans 13:8-10). Unfortunately, rather than sowing love and obedience, humanity habitually continues to plant sin in their fields: selfishness, hate, insecurity, suffering, shame, and bloodshed are some of the crops we still grow today. Because of disobedience, people like the homeless, the abused, the disabled, the wounded soldier, and the broken-hearted daily fight a “war” that they shouldn’t have to fight. Worst of all, too many individuals are finding out too late they are going to hell. This all has taken place because we have rejected God’s plan for mankind. However, there is still hope for this dying world.
People today can experience freedom because Jesus did what He was supposed to do. His sacrifice on the cross gives believers a security one cannot live without. Because of grace, for the believer, sins are forgiven (1 John 1:9), our relationship with Him is restored (Romans 5:1), we have His wisdom toward prosperity (Psalms 32:8), evil hearts can be filled with God’s love (Galatians 5:19-22), and we have His power to overcome any adversity we encounter in life (Deuteronomy 31:6). Because of Love, those who "confess that Jesus is Lord" while "believing in the truth of the resurrection will be saved" (Romans 10:9). All can be free if people just do what they are meant to do.
Individuals cannot find freedom if they are unaware of its existence. For this reason, God wants us to plant His seeds of love to this world by letting Him complete our purpose in life. Only by relentlessly staying connected to the Vine (Jesus) can this take place. “When we remain in Him, we can produce much fruit; apart from Him, we can do nothing” (John 15:5). To abide in Him, we must follow His commands even when we don’t feel like doing so. This is how we show our love to Him and to our surrounding world.
God can use a few of his people, who are in his will, to produce a lot of fruit. Think of the millions saved by the evangelism of both D.L. Moody and Billy Graham. Then imagine the ripple effect change that those converted souls may have had on the people they encountered and the influence that those consequent people had on others and so on and so on. The overall potential impact that Moody and Graham has had on families and future generations is immensely immeasurable.
The harvest that God produced out of Moody’s and Graham’s lives would have never transpired if not for the purposes of everyday people like you and me. D.L. Moody was saved by Edward Kimball, a former shoe-salesman, co-worker of D.L. who one day at work chose to share the gospel with Moody. Billy Graham was converted by a Sunday school teacher named Henrietta Mears. Because of both Mears’ and Kimball’s love and commitment to remain obedient to God, countless numbers of people have consequently experienced freedom in their lives. Mears and Kimball made those decisions of surrender despite being unaware of the magnitude of their acts. Freedom occurs when we do what we are supposed to do even when we don’t think it will do much good!
Everyday we face a crossroad where love and obedience intersects with selfishness and disobedience. Whatever path we take influences not only our fate but also the fate of those around us. Death and destruction has arrived in this world because of sin; yet, freedom and peace can prevail if we let God plant seeds of love in us toward others. Because of Love, we can all have hope. However, for people to find it, we must do what we are supposed to do. If we don’t, freedom for them will be just a dream and not a reality. Choose love and obedience before it is too late!
