The act or force of someone loosing his/her freedom through one means or the other is known as Slavery. Loosing oneís freedom can be through force or the person agrees willfully to serve, in other words, the person buying the freedom decides when to free the bondsman or woman.
Slavery has many parts and categories, but for our write up here we are going to be taking a look at two aspects of slavery that many in the world today are involved in without knowing that they are enslaved. And these are: Inherited slavery and Forced slavery.
The book of 2 Timothy 2:26 gives and paints a very clear instance of inherited slavery. Many these day are carrying the stigma of been slaves to things they know not of, that there parents or grandparents even great grand parents initiated into the family linage. 95% of these family members carry this stigma all the days of there lives without been aware they have such tag of slavery all written on there foreheads. In the early days of human development, before the Bible became wide spread, a lot of homes and families were involved in fetish worship and these were passed down to upcoming generations either by word of mouth or through the oldest member teaching the youngest child in the home, the delicate and hidden secrets that will remain and be a sort of enslavement to that family. Take for an instance a family that had the stigma that every first born as a matter of staying alive must stir clear of eating chicken. This has so been injected into the life of the entire first born in that family that for generations none of them dare eat chicken either for the taste or for mere eating. But the word of God is strong and one day a member of the family, a first born, visited a man of God and met the man sitting comfortably in his sitting room having dinner, and this first born was so famished, that he was salivating from the lips. The man of God on noticing this invited him to table, but our brother despite his hunger declined to eat when he saw the chicken thigh the man of God lifted up to chew. Naturally our brother was dead hungry, but his enslavement to the things laid down by his fore parents nearly caused him to die of hunger on the day. It was only right for the Minister to ask what the problem was, of which our brother with fear and trembling narrated to the Minister. Now fear and trembling! This brother was so afraid to even say what the problem was; he has been doctored not to mention the fact that he is a slave to not eating chicken, while the Bible has told us that God in his infinite love for Man declared all meat to be eatable and none a taboo, that was until man fell from grace but even at that chicken was not in the list of doníts. This brother, so feared and trembled at the thought of this slavery in his life that he only claimed to worship God but this has ruled all his life and at this point in time our brother was in his late, I mean very late 30ís, imagine not knowing the taste of chicken for 30 plus years. The book of 2 Peter 2:19 sum up the whole scene for us here, and our Prophet Isaiah 52:3 points the way of inherited slavery. Our brother after his confession was shown his weakness all these years and made a fresh start with the Lord afterwards, chicken is now part of his favorite meal so also his first child who happens to be a male.
The B part of our slavery will be focused on the area of Forced slavery, the letter of Brother Paul to the Romans in Romans 6:16, talks about a man or woman getting into this act or type of slavery, and after getting involved the person finds it hard to come out of the trap that was not seen from the onset, due to the fact that the person involved was blinded by the prospect of a rosy future, not looking at the silent and deeper part of the bondage that is inside. You find such cases as alcoholism, smoking etc in this class of forced slavery. We are going to use for our illustration alcoholics. They set off on the track with a bottle of beer or what other type of drink they choose, gradually the bottle is increased as the thirst come deeper and the hunger to stay out much late in the bar amongst friends and mates takes increased manifestation in the mind. Soon the urge takes over and you find such drinkers hitting the bottle daily on the pretense that one or two friends will be waiting at the bar for them to discuss a business proposal or take up a good venture together, the habit creeps slowly and soon a network is formed, most of which move from one pub to the other or maintain a particular table in a section of a pub or drinking parlor. This forced type of slavery is the most difficult to get out of, with time the dependence on the bottle takes over, at such times you find the person involved skipping some duties that otherwise will not be too serious to perform, and always mindful of the time to hit the pub where his fellow drinkers are waiting. Yes Brother Paul wrote to our Bishop Timothy to take a little wine for his stomach aliment, but not as an every day over dependence on the bottle, that letter has created many rancors amongst the so called Christians, who find themselves entrapped in the spirit of alcoholism, many use that letter by Brother Paul as an excuse for there actions, forgetting that the book of Proverbs 20:1 has made the coast clear by issuing a stern warning to all that care to listen.
Whichever class of the two one finds himself, the act of slavery is not to be mentioned amongst the children of God, if one should be enslaved for any reason let it be for the propagation of the word of God and his gospel, not any other. Other forms of inherited slavery that are common in the world today are family curses, idol worship, prostitution, polygamy, stealing. While forced slavery has amongst others, lying, hatred, prostitution, etc.
The book of John 8:34 draw the curtains on this text for today.
