I pray that the readers of this article will understand what I am trying to relay regarding speaking in tongues. You may or may not agree with me; that's O.K., but I ask that you at least think about what the scriptures have to say about this. I am not what some call a biblical scholar and I am sure there are those that can correct me and I invite them to do so.
I have heard many sermons and opinions regarding this topic. When I taught Sunday school, I was in a denominational church and I used the scripture in Acts where it stated "and they all heard in their own languages".... After receiving the baptism IN the Holy Spirit (I'll share the testimony as we go along) I found this was true but there was more to it. I am not going to type out all the scriptures listed above because I have learned that each individual has to get into the Word of God for themselves and let the Holy Spirit speak to them personally and individually. This result is known as revelation knowledge. There is a place for speaking in tongues IN CHURCH. (Refer to the scriptures) What I wish to accomplish here is the private prayer language we are given to be used when called upon by God to pray or just to worship our LORD in a language we have never learned. I have always liked to see the practical application of the Word in our daily lives. If you can agree with what I am sharing, I can guarantee your life will be enriched, no matter what state you find yourself in at the moment.
Why is there so much opposition to this gift? ..Even among some born again believers. In the denomination I grew up in believed that this had all passed away. They were wrong.
Isn't it interesting that we seem to reject ideas and truth simply because we personally have not experienced it.
When I was a child, I heard people say "don't go down there to that holy roller church"...they are a bit crazy. The ones making this statement did not even attend a church, so why were they so adamant about it. I have found the reason for it. The devil does not want anyone to have the experience of speaking in tongues because he cannot understand one word of it and it is between the believer and God inspired by the Holy Spirit. That is our power. Our enemy can do nothing to stop the answer to our prayers or our worship of our LORD. Let's expose satan for who he really is, not exalt him when troubles come.
Testimony: My husband died suddenly of a heart attack in 1968. In 1969 I had major surgery with complications. In 1970 I had a mastectomy for breast cancer. The attacks of the enemy were very strong. I attended my denominational church and the people were great, loving, caring people but I 'KNEW" there had to be more to this Christian life than what I was experiencing. I attended the services, sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and went on visiting day, but there was an emptiness still even though' I had been born again since age 16. (time passed) I became so weary of the attacks that I told the Lord that if this was all there was to this Christian life on earth, I wanted to come home. I did not want to stay and watch the destruction that was taking place in my life, BUT if there was more, then I wanted that. There is not enough room on this venue to detail all of it so I'll try to summarize. JESUS baptized me IN HIS HOLY SPIRIT.... I spoke in tongues, sang in tongues...reaching notes I had never reached in the natural...such JOY overflowed for that entire weekend. Then, you know what happened, I thought "this is not real, you don't even know what you are saying" "It's just your imagination"...these thoughts kept coming until one day I stopped speaking in tongues. I remember asking the Lord about it and just forgot about it. Then one Saturday morning I was watching a program on TV with my teenage son where they were talking with a young Cherokee Indian girl and they asked her to sing something in her native language....WOW!!!! SHE WAS SINGING IN THE LANGUAGE I HAD BEEN SPEAKING. I am part Cherokee Indian. How about that? The Lord said, Now do you believe this is real? Yes!!!! It is real. Then HE took this language from me and gave me a new spirit language....I have never questioned this one and I use it (if I may put it in those terms) every day. It is such a blessing.
This has become rather lengthy so I'll stop for now. Please do not let satan deceive you and deprive you of this blessing. He will fight with you as long as you let him. He has done his best to keep me from writing this, but he is defeated. Perhaps the Lord will allow me to share more in an additional submission.

I too have seen opposition in many churches to the gift of speaking in tongues, and as well the other charismatic gifts: the gifts of healing, casting out demons, working of miracles, and others. There are multiple reasons, I think, for this but the bottom line is that the Body of Christ, the Church, has no less need of these wonderful gifts than the first century church did. I am praying this will change.
Preach and teach on my dear sister. Satan raises such a fuss also because of the power and aurhority that come with all gifts of the Holy Spirit AND we use tongues to praise Jesus and satan can't stand to hear that either. Hugs, Marijo
