Dead End Road
Traveling toward a dead end road
On my way to nowhere
I noticed a simple little house
With a porch and a rocking chair
I was ushered by a thought of mine
To go and take a look
All the windows were void of shades
Looked like that little house came from a book
I walked up through a pathway of weeds
Looking toward the trees
A bush of lilac perfumed the air
I felt like I had been hooked with a lure
With each step through those weeds
The closer I got to the porch
Sounds of life were awakened
Like a burning endless torch
A bark of a collie at the side of a boy
From behind the house they came running
A fishing pole hanging over his shoulder
That look he gave me was ever so cunning
He smiled at me from ear to ear
But inside that smile was a little tiny tear
He said, “Howdy stranger, I am so glad you’re here
The fishing hole awaits me, it is so very near
A green-eyed lady in an apron fair
Stood in the doorway with long black hair
Ebony black and eyes of pure brown
more than likely, the prettiest girl around
Her eyes twinkled with the light of a star
She said, “Tell me your lost sir, I just know you are”.
Cause we live out in nowhere on a dead end road
No one ever comes near our little abode.
I said, “Actually, lady just how did you know?
I lost myself many years ago
When a drunken driver took my wife and child
I haven’t been me for long long while
I found this road on a dusty trail
At the end of my journey after riding the rail
Life is not so easy for a hobo like me
I am a real plain person, I guess you can see
The smile she gave me was laced with love
She looked at me and her still small voice said
“Sir, If you’ll hang around and rest a awhile
I’ll cook some supper and you can stay for a spell
Then suddenly to my surprise
That rocking chair came to life right in front of my eyes
A man with a face of age one could trace
Stared at me through a horned rimmed gaze
He said, “Sonny, please say you’ll stay
The meals Sarah cooks are out of this world
Fried chicken and baked beans with corn on the cob
Come on, please stay, and give her cooking a whirl".
I told that sweet gentlemen, “Of course I’ll stay
Haven’t had a home cooked meal in many a day”
Haven’t been in a hurry since 2002
Nowhere to go and nothing to do
Sarah said, “Come on in and I’ll show you around
By the way, “welcome to our humble abode
No one ever comes to visit
Since we are on a dead-end road”
I turned and followed her through the front door
Inside that little house was an antique store
Everything in place from 1865
I must pinch myself, am I still alive?
Sarah woke me from my day dreaming state
In answer to all your thoughts she said,
“This is for real, don’t be amazed
We came to give meaning to all your days”
We only live when strangers come and visit
Haven’t had any company since 1950
When we get company, it’s a miracle from the Master
He has us working overtime, we fix disasters
“Now take off that hat, and just relax”
I have a message for you from someone named Pat”!
Sarah reached me a note, it said, “with all my love”
The hand writing pushed on my heart with a gentle shove.
As I opened the note, Lady Sarah said,
“I am going to start supper and the recipe is by Pat
I said, “Well you don’t have to tell me twice
fried chicken and baked beans and cobbed corn on the side”!
Sarah said, “While you take off that hat, you can take off those boots too”.
Put your feet up and rest them a spell
We have peace from heaven and it is sweet as apple pie
Then she headed back toward the kitchen with an angel sigh
He took off that Stetson hat and those dusty boots
Opened that note, squinted his eyes to take a look
The smell of the note perfumed the room
Heaven scent straight from the sun and moon
My darling John:
Time passes swiftly here on heavens shore, and your baby son has grown into a wonderful looking man. We are waiting for you just inside the gate and we are cheering you on home. Please, don’t be unhappy anymore and quit mourning. You have carried this burden way too long.
We are so very happy here and night time never comes and oh the beauty of this place I could never write here on this page.
John, I want to see you here inside these beautiful walls! Remember how I use to try to get you to go to church. Well, it is never too late! Find a little church and grow and just remember we love you so.
We will be waiting and watching!
I love you so very much!
Your forever wife, Pat!
Have a beautiful supper with Sarah, Michael and Gabe.
Sarah likes to cook, Michael loves to fish and Gabe likes to watch time roll by as he rocks in his big red rocking chair.
1Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
